What’s Streaming This Week (9/13 – 9/20)

Welcome to When To Stream’s Weekly Preview! Every week, we take a closer look at the major film streaming releases scheduled to launch in the next 7 days. As always, release dates are subject to change.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2026

THE END OF OAK STREET – $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental

Cast: Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery

Synopsis: After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.

What we like:

• Writer-director David Robert Mitchell, who brought us the stone-cold classic It Follows and the ambitious Under the Silver Lake, returns to feature filmmaking after a long eight-year gap. It’s great to have him back.
• Mitchell has cited influences including The Twilight Zone, Poltergeist, Signs and Jurassic Park, which helps explain why the film has a strange, suspense-oriented tone rather than being a straightforward dinosaur action movie.
• The summer of Anne Hathaway continues, with the actress giving another standout performance. All the actors, including Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery, are great.
• Michael Giacchino’s music somehow evokes the classic Amblin/John Williams scores of the 1980s without ripping them off.

What we don’t like:

• We caught this in theaters and had an absolute blast. Too bad the box-office was only so-so, with a domestic total currently sitting $52M. That’s not great for a film that reportedly cost around $80M-$90M. We highly recommend checking it out now that it’s hitting digital.

FINDING EMILY – $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental

Cast: Angourie Rice, Spike Fearn, Minnie Driver

Synopsis: When a lovesick musician is given the wrong number for his dream girl, he teams up with a driven psychology student to find her. Together, they spark a hilarious campus-wide frenzy that tests their own hearts and ambitions along the way.

What we like:

• This British romantic comedy comes from Working Title Films, the production company behind some of the most iconic rom-coms in history, including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Notting Hill.
• The film stars Angourie Rice, who’s best known for playing Betty Brandt in the Spider-Man films, and Spike Fearn, who’s best known for being one of the worst parts of Ella McCay (probably not his fault!).
• It’s the feature-directing debut of Alicia MacDonald, who previously directed mostly British television.

What we don’t like:

• Despite overall strong reviews (it currently sits at 89% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), there weren’t many takers at the box-office for Focus Features. The film managed to earn only about $1.5M.

IT ENDS – $14.99 Sale / $9.99 Rental

Cast: Phinehas Yoon, Akira Jackson, Noah Toth, Mitchell Cole

Synopsis: A group of recent grads head out on a late night drive for grub, hoping to enjoy one final hangout before their paths diverge. Instead, they accidentally turn onto a never-ending, two lane hellscape surrounded by untold horrors and cosmic forces beyond their understanding.

What we like:

• This surreal existential horror film comes from writer-director Alexander Ullom, making his feature directorial debut. Ullom was singled out by Filmmaker Magazine as one of its “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2024.
• The film had its world premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest Film Festival, where it played in the Narrative Feature Competition. After its festival run, it became one of the early films offered through Letterboxd Video Store, where it received a limited digital rental release in December 2025. NEON later acquired it for a theatrical release.
• The unsettling musical score comes from composer Matthew Robert Cooper, also known by the moniker Eluvium.

What we don’t like:

• Critics have been much more enthusiastic about the film than audiences. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the film at 93% from critics, compared with a 60% verified audience score.

NIMRODS – $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental

Cast: Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, Keen Ruffalo, Jolene Blalock, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Sean Gunn, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, Tré Cool, and Mckenna Grace

Synopsis: Three friends journey from Kansas City to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing that their band is opening for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.

What we like:

• This Green Day-inspired coming-of-age road comedy that was originally titled New Years Rev, and it world premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.
• All three Green Day members are credited as producers, and they also all appear in the film.
• Armstrong has discussed Rushmore and the films of John Hughes as inspirations for the movie’s youthful, comedic tone.

What we don’t like:

• The film received a mixed reaction from critics. It currently holds a 55 Metacritic score, which isn’t great. Still…if you’re a fan of Green Day, you probably won’t want to miss it.

THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING – $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental

Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Angelina LookingGlass, Kurt Russell, Jake Horowitz, Scott Shepherd, Rob Morgan, Tony Revolori, Owen Teague, Bruce Davis, Cole Sprouse

Synopsis: In rural Oklahoma, Kateri loses her mother and flees foster care. She reunites with past foster parent Amziah King, who mentors her, revealing hidden skills. Facing devastating situations, Kateri relies on newfound strength to seek justice.

What we like:

• This Southern crime drama was written and directed by Andrew Patterson, who previously made the acclaimed low-budget sci-fi mystery The Vast of Night in 2019.
• David Heyman, best known for producing the Harry Potter films and numerous other major movies, produced this much smaller, highly idiosyncratic project through his Heyday Films.
• This was Matthew McConaughey’s first non-voice-only role in film since 2019.

What we don’t like:

• This was one of our most anticipated titles of the year. We LOVED The Vast of Night, which we’re convinced is one of the strongest feature debuts of the past 10 years. But Amziah King just didn’t work for us. Our expectations were sky-high, which probably didn’t help. Critics like it (it’s at 89% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), so we’re clearly in the minority here. We can’t wait to see what Patterson does next.

TONY – $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental

Cast: Dominic Sessa, Emilia Jones, Dagmara Dominczyk, Rich Sommers, Stavros Halkias, with Leo Woodall and Antonio Banderas

Synopsis: A 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain travels to Provincetown and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, setting off a summer that will shape the course of his life.

What we like:

• This A24 biographical drama about Anthony Bourdain focuses on Bourdain before he became famous. Rather than covering his entire life, Tony concentrates on 19-year-old Bourdain, when he travels to Provincetown, Massachusetts, and discovers the chaotic world of restaurant kitchens.
• Dominic Sessa, who broke out in The Holdovers, takes on the title role. He smartly modulates his performance to avoid impersonation. It’s an impressive star-turn.
• Antonio Banderas plays a fictionalized mentor figure, and he’s getting Oscar buzz for his performance. It would be great if he snagged another nomination after his titanic Pain and Glory performance in 2019.
• The film is directed (and co-written) by Matt Johnson, who follows up his phenomenal Nivanna the Band the Show the Movie with this winning biopic.

What we don’t like:

• The film depicts a 19-year-old Tony as obnoxious, self-aggrandizing, and a compulsive liar, opening with a quote calling him a “spoiled, miserable, narcissistic, self-destructive, and thoughtless young lout”. Many fans and critics felt the movie leaned too hard into an unappealing anti-hero angle without offering enough of the charm people associated with the adult Bourdain.

Friday, September 18th, 2026

BEST OF THE BEST – Netflix

Cast: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Priyanka Kedia, Ankur Rathee, Janina Gavankar, Chaneil Kular, Becky Alex, Shreya Navile, and Hasan Minhaj. Also starring Nihar Duvvuri, Nico Greetham, Amryn Khurana, Tanishq Joshi, Lilly Singh, Saara Chaudry, Sasha Bhasin

Synopsis: Two childhood best friends, Maya (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and Anjali (Priyanka Kedia), join their college’s competitive Bollywood dance team only to discover that the road to winning the national championship is far more raucous and cutthroat than they ever imagined.

What we like:

• The film stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, best known for Netflix’s Never Have I Ever and the hit Disney sequel Freakier Friday.
• Comedian Hasan Minhaj co-wrote the screenplay with Prashanth Venkataramanujam, and also produced the movie, and plays Professor Hamza Latif. The pair previously collaborated on Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.
• It has a terrific ensemble of South Asian performers, inclduing Lilly Singh, Janina Gavankar, Ankur Rathee, Chaneil Kular, Saara Chaudry, Sasha Bhasin

What we don’t like:

• Despite the story being set around UCLA in Los Angeles, production records list New Jersey as the primary filming location. We love New Jersey, but bring back production to LA! It’s needed.

GOODY GOODY – Shudder

Cast: Samantha Robinson, Colleen Foy, Zoe Renee, Colby Hollman

Synopsis: A home birth turns terribly wrong when complications arise during a raging blizzard.

What we like:

• This horror-thriller is the feature directing debut of Raymond Creamer, who also wrote the screenplay.
• The story centers on an expectant mother, her partner and a midwife at a remote property. When a blizzard traps them inside, complications during the delivery become increasingly sinister.
• Samantha Robinson plays Goody, the expectant mother. She’s particularly recognizable to horror fans as the star of 2016’s The Love Witch.

What we don’t like:

• We hate to pick on Shudder (a streamer we love and support), but hoo boy…that poster is a mess. We realize they release multiple titles a month, and often have to create poster art from scratch, but the Goody Goody poster is illegible.
