A LITTLE PRAYER – Prime Video
Cast: David Strathairn, Jane Levy, Will Pullen, Celia Weston, Dascha Polanco, and Anna Camp
Synopsis: A loving father grapples with how to protect his daughter-in-law when he discovers that his son is having an affair in a sensitive and searching portrait of a Southern family.
What we like:
- Junebug screenwriter Angus MacLachlan directs this low-key charmer with standout performances from David Strathairn and Jane Levy.
- At the 41st Independent Spirit Awards, the film received nominations for Best Screenplay (MacLachlan) and Best Supporting Performance (Levy)
- Critics have raved about this one, and it currently sits at 94% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
What we don’t like:
- The film had a tortured path to its theatrical release. It had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where Sony Pictures Classics acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film. However, it became apparent during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike that the deal with Sony failed to materialize, with rights reverting to the film’s producers. By May 2025, Music Box Films had acquired North American distribution rights to the film, and it was released theatrically in the United States last August.
THE MOMENT – $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental
Cast: Charli xcx, Rosanna Arquette, Kate Berlant, Jamie Demetriou, Hailey Benton Gates, Isaac Powell, Alexander Skarsgård
Synopsis: A rising pop star navigates the complexities of fame and industry pressure while preparing for her arena tour debut.
What we like:
- This mocumentary stars Charli xcx, portraying a fictionalized, exaggerated version of herself as a pop star wrestling with the pressures of fame and creative control.
- The movie marks the feature film directorial debut of Aidan Zamiri, who previously worked with Charli xcx on several of her music videos.
- The film features cameos by real-life celebrities we’ve heard of (Kylie Jenner, Rachel Sennott, Julia Fox) and people we’ve never heard of (Shygirl, Mel Ottenberg, A.G. Cook).
What we don’t like:
- Full disclosure: Our music taste (and consumption) is stuck in amber somewhere back in 2003. We are not the target audience here. And hearing that Alexander Skarsgård plays a Gen X Coldplay-enthusiast director who tries to give Charli advice to tone down her ‘brat-ness’? Well…let’s just say we see ourselves in that character. Now if we only looked like Alexander Skarsgård….
A PRIVATE LIFE – TBD Sale / TBD Rental
Cast: Jodie Foster, Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Efira, Mathieu Amalric, Vincent Lacoste and Luana Bajrami
Synopsis: Psychiatrist Lilian Steiner moonlights as an amateur sleuth following the death of Paula, one of her long-time patients. Convinced that Paula’s supposed death by suicide is actually an unsolved murder, Lilian pursues her nagging suspicions.
What we like:
- Jodie Foster’s first major leading role almost entirely in the French language, a challenge she embraced by immersing herself in France ahead of filming to sharpen her fluency.
- Foster’s performance earned her a Lumière Award nomination for Best Actress, making her the first American recognized in that category by French critics.
- Alongside Foster, the film features a terrific lineup of celebrated French actors including Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Efira, Mathieu Amalric, and Vincent Lacoste.
What we don’t like:
- Legendary filmmaker and documentarian Frederick Wiseman makes his final film appearance here in a minor supporting role. Wiseman passed away at age 96 earlier this month, and he’ll be greatly missed.
WHISTLE – $19.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Cast: Dafne Keen, Nick Frost, Sophie Nelisse, Michelle Fairley, Ali Skovbye
Synopsis: A group of misfit high school students stumble upon an ancient Aztec death whistle. They find that when they blow the whistle, the terrifying sound it emits will invoke their future deaths to hunt them down. As the body count rises, the friends investigate the origins of the deadly artifact in a desperate effort to stop the horrifying chain of events that they have set in motion.
What we like:
- This supernatural horror thriller plays on the idea that your death is already encoded in your future, and the whistle accelerates that fate, making death take physical form to come after its victims. Very Final Destination-coded.
- Director Corin Hardy has noted influences from classic horror films like The Ring, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and It Follows, blending supernatural dread with teen horror elements.
- Everyone’s favorite beard from Heated Rivalry, Sophie Nélisse, is one of the leads.
What we don’t like:
- It’s not as if the ‘death comes for you’-trope can’t be expanded on or explored, but the Final Destination franchise and It Follows have set a very high bar for the genre. Final Destination…but with a whistle, is kind of reminding us of this:

100 NIGHTS OF HERO – AMC+
Cast: Maika Monroe, Emma Corrin, Nicholas Galitzine, Charli XCX, Felicity Jones, Richard E. Grant
Synopsis: When a charming house guest arrives at a remote castle, the delicate dynamic between a neglectful husband, his innocent bride Cherry and their devoted maid Hero is thrown into chaos.
What we like:
- Canadian filmmaker Julia Jackman’s second film, this fantasy romance is based on the graphic novel The One Hundred Nights of Hero by Isabel Greenberg, which itself was based on the Middle Eastern folktale One Thousand and One Nights.
- The film was recently nominated for three British Independent Film Awards, including Best Costume Design (PC Williams), Best Makeup & Hair Design (Kehinde Are, Feyzo Oyebisi), and Best Production Design (Jennifer Anti, Pablo Anti).
What we don’t like:
- Despite a terrific cast and pretty decent reviews, Independent Film Company couldn’t drum up much business at the arthouses this month. Was it the awkward title? The Ren-Faire vibes? We’re kinda anxious to check it out.
FACKHAM HALL – HBO Max
Cast: Ben Radcliffe, Thomasin McKenzie, Katherine Waterston, Lizzie Hopley, Emma Laird, Damian Lewis and Tom Felton
Synopsis: A new porter who embarks on an unlikely relationship with the youngest daughter of a prominent UK family. At the same time, rivalries are spilling over in the Davenport family, led by Lord and Lady Davenport as they also weather the epic failure of the wedding of their eldest daughter to her caddish cousin.
What we like:
- Fackham Hall lovingly mocks British aristocratic dramas like Downton Abbey and Gosford Park, blending Airplane!-style rapid-fire jokes with stately settings. Feels like a genre that was ripe for parody.
- British comedian Jimmy Carr co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Patrick Carr and The Dawson Brothers, and also pops up on screen as a hilariously incompetent vicar.
- The film was shot on location in historic estates and country homes around Yorkshire and Liverpool, giving it authentic production design that mimics the period films it’s parodying.
What we don’t like:
- According to the filmmakers, nearly 280 jokes are packed into the film’s 97-minute runtime. That’s a joke every 20 seconds on average. The trailer’s had some groan-worthy gags, but we must admit…we did chuckle at the ‘Our Souls/Arseholes’ bit. So we’ll watch with tempered expectations, and hope to be pleasantly surprised.
HEEL – $16.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Cast: Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Anson Boon
Synopsis: Nineteen year old Tommy likes his life as a criminal, and leads his friends in acts of horrifying violence, until one night he is kidnapped by a stranger, Chris. Waking up with a chain around his neck in the basement of an isolated home, Tommy finds himself at the centre of a dysfunctional family dynamic as Chris and his mysterious wife Kathryn try to make Tommy a “good boy”, in a process of forced rehabilitation. The one thing Tommy knows for sure: he must escape.
What we like:
- Producer Jerzy Skolimowski approached director Jan Komasa with the film’s screenplay while the latter was promoting his 2019 Oscar-nominated film, Corpus Christi. The screenplay, originally written in Polish and set in Warsaw, was adapted into English and set in Yorkshire to appeal to a wider audience.
- The film’s cast includes Stephen Graham, who’s been ubiquitous on the awards circuit winning trophies for his Netflix limited series Adolescence. Plus, the always entertaining Andrea Riseborough!
- Critics love it: It currently sits at 94% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
What we don’t like:
- The film was originally titled “Good Boy” but was renamed to avoid being confused with Ben Leonberg’s 2025 film Good Boy. It’s too bad, because Heel is definitely a title downgrade. It’s not terrible…just not memorable.
HAMNET – Peacock
Cast: Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn
Synopsis: The powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.
What we like:
- A film with impeccable pedigree: It’s adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 historical novel by the author and Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao (who also directs). The film’s producers include Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes.
- The film won the People’s Choice Award at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, and then went on to win Best Motion Picture – Drama, and Best Actress – Drama (Buckley) at the 2026 Golden Globes.
- Hamnet earned 9 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting (Nina Gold), Best Costume Design (Malgosia Turzanska), Best Production Design (Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton), and Best Original Score (Max Richter). Buckley is widely expected to take Best Actress.
What we don’t like:
- Despite its stellar reviews, festival acclaim, and high-profile awards, Focus Features was never really able to get this cooking at the box-office. It currently sits at about $25M domestically, which significantly less than what Focus’ other holiday release, the Kate Hudson – Hugh Jackman musical drama Song Sung Blue, earned in the US.
THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 3 – $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Cast: Madelaine Petsch, Gabe Basso, Ema Horvath, and Richard Brake
Synopsis: Tethered by a frightening conclusion, Maya and the Strangers are locked on an unavoidable, unforgiving collision course — a showdown that proves they’re far from strangers now.
What we like:
- Guys, we made it. The fifth film in The Strangers franchise and the concluding chapter of the new Renny Harlin-directed trilogy that began with Chapter 1 (2024) and continued in Chapter 2 (2025) is coming to digital. We thought we’d never get through it…but we have.
- The movie stars Madelaine Petsch as Maya, the recurring survivor who continues to battle the masked killers. She’s a very appealing actress who we hope gets more work.
What we don’t like:
- Unlike the original standalone films, this trilogy was shot back-to-back in 2022, a production strategy more akin to high-budget fantasy franchises than slasher movies, and underwent additional reshoots to tweak the final chapter. And we know reshoots always fix everything! 18% of Rotten Tomatoes critics agree!
WAR MACHINE – Netflix
Cast: Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Blake Richardson, Keiynan Lonsdale, Daniel Webber
Synopsis: During the final stage of US Army Ranger selection, an elite team’s training exercise turns into a fight for survival against an unimaginable threat.
What we like:
- A sci-fi action film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Patrick Hughes, best known for The Hitman’s Bodyguard and its sequel, The Hitman’s Bodyguard’s Wife.
- Despite the title, it has nothing to do with the Marvel character War Machine, it’s an entirely original story about soldiers facing an alien threat.
- The film received a two week theatrical run in Australia! Who says Netflix doesn’t support theatrical???
What we don’t like:
- This is the second Netflix Original movie titled War Machine. The first one came out in 2017 and starred Brad Pitt in the lead role, but they are not connected at all. We all fondly remember that War Machine, right? Anyone??

I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST – Starz
Cast: Corey Fogelmanis, Alexandra Daddario, Cole Sprouse, and Lena Dunham
Synopsis: A non-binary teen is kicked out of their North Carolina home after coming out to their ultra-religious parents. As a result, they move in with their estranged sister and her husband. Though the two are welcoming, they continue to struggle with anxiety further exacerbated by their parents’ rejection. As such, they try to keep a low profile at school. However, after they meet a proudly bisexual classmate, their life begins to look a little more hopeful.
What we like:
- An adaptation of Mason Deaver’s bestselling YA novel of the same name, this is actress Tommy Dorfman’s feature directorial debut.
- Dorfman respected the tone of the book by focusing less on typical dramatic “big reveal” tropes and more on inner life, self-acceptance, and found family.
What we don’t like:
- Lionsgate gave the film a micro-release in theaters, and didn’t report box-office grosses, but the film didn’t seem to make much of a ripple. Here’s hoping the book’s sizable readership catches up with the film on streaming.
NUREMBERG – Netflix
Cast: Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, Michael Shannon, Leo Woodall, Richard E. Grant, John Slattery, Mark O’Brien, Colin Hanks, Lydia Peckham, Wrenn Schmidt
Synopsis: The Allies, led by the unyielding chief prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson (Michael Shannon), have the task of ensuring the Nazi regime answers for the unveiled horrors of the Holocaust while a US Army psychiatrist (Rami Malek) is locked in a dramatic psychological duel with former Reichsmarschall Herman Göring (Russell Crowe).
What we like:
- This psychological thriller and historical drama written, directed, and co-produced by James Vanderbilt, is based on the 2013 non-fiction book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai. Vanderbilt wrote the script for the David Fincher masterpiece Zodiac, so we’ll always give his films a look.
- The story sheds light on a lesser-known chapter of history: how psychiatrists were tasked with profiling Nazi leaders’ mental states to ensure they were fit for trial and unlikely to commit suicide, a real concern that shaped strategies for the historic tribunal.
- The film is stacked with talented actors: Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Mark O’Brien, Colin Hanks, Richard E. Grant, and Michael Shannon. Terrific cast.
What we don’t like:
- We often use this space to grouse about box-office underperformance. It’s bleak out there! But….twist! This drama was an arthouse blockbuster for specialty distributor Sony Pictures Classics. It grossed $14.5M domestically, making it their highest grossing film since 2017’s Call Me By Your Name. And it has been a mainstay on the digital charts since its PVOD release in late December. A huge winner for Sony Classics.
Happy Streaming Everyone!
