IS THIS THING ON? – TBD Sale / TBD Rental
Cast: Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Andra Day, Bradley Cooper, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, Scott Icenogle
Synopsis: As their marriage quietly unravels, Alex (Will Arnett) faces middle age and an impending divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene while Tess (Laura Dern) confronts the sacrifices she made for their family—forcing them to navigate co-parenting, identity, and whether love can take a new form.
What we like:
- After the big-budget, big swings of A Star is Born and Maestro, Bradley Cooper takes it down a notch with this comedic drama. In addition to directing, he co-writes, co-produces, and has a supporting role (his character’s name is ‘Balls’).
- Instead of building sets, the production filmed in actual New York streets and clubs, including the famous Comedy Cellar and the Olive Tree Café, to give the stand-up scenes authenticity.
- The film’s stellar supporting cast includes living legend Amy Sedaris.
What we don’t like:
- Why don’t movies (and tv shows…looking at you Mrs. Maisel) about stand-up comedians ever have funny jokes? It just feels like an important part of the equation, and yet they’re always just meh. We haven’t seen this one yet, but many reviews call out Will Arnett’s chararcter’s stand-up as pretty lame.
MARTY SUPREME – $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental
Cast: Timothee Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Fran Drescher, Odessa A’zion, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary and Abel Ferrara
Synopsis: Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.
What we like:
- Directed by Josh Safdie, best known for collaborating with his brother Benny on intense character pieces like Uncut Gems and Good Time, this film marks his first solo directorial effort in years and blends sports, comedy, and drama in a uniquely chaotic style.
- Jennifer Venditti is nominated in this year’s inaugural Best Casting Oscar category, and it’s easy to see why: It stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler, the Creator, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher in eccentric supporting roles.
- In addition to the Best Casting nomination, the film received 8 additional Oscar nods: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Chalamet), Best Original Screenplay (Safdie, Ronald Bronstein), Best Cinematography (Darius Khondji), Best Production Design (Jack Fisk, Adam Willis), Best Editing (Safdie, Bronstein), and Best Costume Design (Miyako Bellizzi).
What we don’t like:
- Marty Supreme failed to get a Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar nomination, which seems criminal considering Chalamet’s make-up prompted Gwyneth Paltrow to give some unsolicited advice (via People):

NIGHT PATROL – $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Cast: Jermaine Fowler, Justin Long, Freddie Gibbs, RJ Cyler, YG, Nicki Micheaux, Flying Lotus, Phil Brooks, Dermot Mulroney, Jon Oswald
Synopsis: An L.A. cop discovers a local task force is hiding a secret that puts the residents of his childhood neighborhood in danger.
What we like:
- Filmmaker Ryan Prows directs and co-writes (with Shaye Ogbonna, Tim Cairo and Jake Gibson) this horror thriller, which serves as his second collaboration with horror streamer Shudder. He previously contributed a segment to the anthology franchise V/H/S 94.
- We’ll say it again: In this era of straight-to-streaming action thrillers, we appreciate that RLJE Films and Shudder give their titles proper theatrical releases.
What we don’t like:
- After its world premiere at the 2025 Fantastic Fest, review were tepid. It currently sits at 53 on Metacritic. And despite a relatively wide theatrical footprint (800 theaters), the film managed only $372K.
PRIMATE – $24.99 Sale / $19.99
Cast: Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, Charlie Mann, Tienne Simon and Troy Kotsur
Synopsis: Home from college, Lucy reunites with family including pet chimp Ben. Ben contracts rabies during a pool party and turns aggressive. Lucy and friends barricade in pool, devising ways to survive the vicious chimp.
What we like:
- This killer chimp thriller is directed by Johannes Roberts, who delivered some solid shark scares in the 2017 sleeper hit 47 Meters Down.
- Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (CODA) stars as Adam, the deaf father of the family whose pet goes savage, and his deafness is actually used creatively in key scenes, especially in sound design moments where silence and awareness play into the tension.
- For a January release (aka ‘Dump-uary’), this one got some good reviews. It currently sits at 79% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
What we don’t like:
- This ‘chimp as pet’ cautionary tale made us curious about the fate of one the world’s most famous chimps: Michael Jackson’s pet chimp Bubbles. But reading his Wikipedia page is depressing. The good news…he’s still alive! But let’s keep chimpanzees in the wild.
ROSEMEAD – $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Cast: Lucy Liu, Lawrence Shou, Orion Lee, Jennifer Lim, Madison Hu, James Chen, Eleven Lee
Synopsis: In a race against time, an ailing woman discovers her teenage son’s violent obsessions and must go to great lengths to protect him, and possibly others, in this portrait of a Chinese American family. Inspired by true events.
What we like:
- Eric Lin makes his feature directorial debut, working from a screenplay by Marilyn Fu, which is based on a 2017 Los Angeles Times column about tragic real-life events in Rosemead, California.
- The film took the Best Narrative Feature prize at the Bentonville Film Festival, where Lucy Liu was also honored for supporting underrepresented stories. It also received the Audience Award at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival.
What we don’t like:
- We haven’t gotten a chance to catch up with this one yet, but…hoo boy…we just read the wikipedia summary, and this is some bleak, harrowing stuff. We love that Lucy Liu is able to stretch as an actress, too bad she wasn’t able to get any awards traction.

PREDATOR: BADLANDS – Hulu
Cast: Elle Fanning, Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi
Synopsis: In the future on a remote planet, a young Predator outcast from his clan finds an unlikely ally in Thia and embarks on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary.
What we like:
- This film is the first in the main Predator franchise where a member of the Predator species (the Yautja) is the central hero rather than humans hunting Predators. And his name is Dek! Great name!
- Newly Oscar nominated Elle Fanning not only plays the upbeat android Thia, but also her antagonist twin Tessa. We love when a actress gets a meaty duel role, but it wouldn’t it have been fun to have Dakota Fanning play Tessa? Just spitballin’ here.
- Director Dan Trachtenberg delivers another solid entry in the Predator franchise, having previously helmed 2022’s Prey and the 2025’s animated Predator: Killer of Killers. He’s done a terrific job of exploring and expanding the Predator world rather than just repeating the same formula over and over again.
What we don’t like:
- There was a lot of grousing when the film’s PG-13 rating was announced, with some fans convinced the franchise was going soft. But the action is as intense as ever, it just doesn’t feature any human red blood.

ETERNITY – Apple TV
Cast: Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, Callum Turner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, John Early
Synopsis: In an afterlife where souls have one week to decide where to spend eternity, Joan is faced with the impossible choice between the man she spent her life with and her first love, who died young and has waited decades for her to arrive.
What we like:
- Honestly…it’s about time another film tackled the ‘Afterlife Process Romance’ after Albert Brooks’ 1991 masterpiece Defending Your Life. And it sounds like this film is a well-executed (if not perfect) spin on the genre.
- Pat Cunnane’s script for Eternity was voted onto The Black List of most-liked unproduced screenplays in 2022.
- The film was nominated for Best Comedy at the Critics Choice Movie Awards, where it was up against The Ballad of Wallis Island, Friendship, The Naked Gun, The Phoenician Scheme, and Splitsville. Pretty good group of nominees! The Naked Gun got the win.
What we don’t like:
- Before the film had its world premiere in Toronto, director and co-writer David Freyne discovered he had a benign brain tumor. He was able to attend the Toronto premiere in September 2025, but underwent surgery to remove a majority of the tumor shortly afterwards. The surgery lasted 10 hours, and Freyne spent the next six weeks in recovery. Freyne and four of his surgeons attended the London premiere of the film, and Freyne publicly commended them from the stage.
- For the record: We don’t like brain tumors. We do like people surviving brain tumors.
HONEY BUNCH – Shudder
Cast: Grace Glowicki, Ben Petrie, Jason Isaacs, Kate Dickie
Synopsis: Diana’s husband is taking her to an experimental trauma facility deep in the wilderness, but she can’t remember why…. As her memories begin to creep back in so do some unwelcome sinister truths about her marriage.
What we like:
- This psychological thriller had its world premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival in the Berlinale Special program.
- Madeleine Sims-Fewer and Dusty Mancinelli wrote and directed the movie, and they’re partners off screen as well.
- This film was nominated for the Golden Octopus at the Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival and won Best Special, Visual, or Makeup Effects at Sitges.
What we don’t like:
- We’re excited to check this one out, but must admit, the title makes us think of just one thing:

TYLER PERRY’S JOE’S COLLEGE ROAD TRIP – Netflix
Cast: Tyler Perry, Jermaine Harris, Amber Reign Smith
Synopsis: In an effort to teach him about the real world, Joe (Tyler Perry) takes B.J. (Jermaine Harris) on a cross-country college road trip where tensions get high but life-changing lessons are learned.
What we like:
- After appearing as a side character in multiple Madea films, Madea’s outspoken brother Joe becomes the main focus in this spin-off.
- Perry wrote, directed, and stars in the movie, and reprises several characters including Joe, Madea, and Brian Simmons. The man is quite literally the hardest working man in showbiz.
- Believe it or not, the character of Joe came before Madea. Tyler Perry played Joe in his very first play “I Know I’ve Been Changed”, which toured from 1993-2000.
What we don’t like:
- Can we talk about the title, which is a tongue-twister that’s nearly impossible to say without mumbling. It’s reminding us of:

BLUE MOON – Netflix
Cast: Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, Andrew Scott
Synopsis: On the evening of March 31, 1943, legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart confronts his shattered self-confidence in Sardi’s bar as his former collaborator Richard Rodgers celebrates the opening night of his ground-breaking hit musical “Oklahoma!”.
What we like:
- Richard Linklater’s second of two 2025 releases is the flip side of his other acclaimed film Nouvelle Vague. Where that movie examined the beginning of an artist’s career (Godard), Blue Moon looks at the end of Lorenz Hart’s relevance. A great double feature!
- Ethan Hawke picked up his 5th Oscar nomination for his performance, his first in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category. Writer Robert Kaplow also earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination for his whip-smart script. Two very well-deserved nominations. This is one of our favorites of 2025.
What we don’t like:
- We wish this Sony Pictures Classics release had done better at arthouse theaters. It earned about $2.1M at the domestic box-office, which isn’t great. The good news: Now that it’s hitting Netflix in the US, it should reach a much wider audience.
GOOD FORTUNE – Starz
Cast: Seth Rogen, Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer, with Sandra Oh, and Keanu Reeves
Synopsis: In GOOD FORTUNE, a well-meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel (Keanu Reeves) meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Aziz Ansari) and a wealthy venture capitalist (Seth Rogen).
What we like:
- Aziz Ansari wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this comedy, marking his first time helming a full-length feature film.
- Ansari assembled an absolutely fantastic cast of talented actors: Seth Rogan, Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, Matt Rogers, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. Plus…Keanu Reeves, whose comedic performance really brings out such a loose, appealing quality in the actor. More comedies for Keanu please!
- After its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, the film received very positive reviews from critics. It currently sits at 78% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
What we don’t like:
- Against a production budget of a reported $30M, the film earned only $26M worldwide. Not great. However! Readers of our weekly digital top 10s might remember the film has been a mainstay on the VOD charts since its release in early November. It might not push the film into profit anytime soon, but it does suggest there’s an appetite for studio comedies.
Happy Streaming Everyone!
