MISTY GREEN – Netflix
Cast: Rosalind Eleazar, Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick, Chris Rock
Synopsis: Years after her Hollywood breakthrough, a talented actress whose career has stalled fights for her second act.
What we like:
- This is Chris Rock’s first feature film as writer-director since 2014’s well-received Top Five.
- Rosalind Eleazar stars as Misty Green, an Emmy-winning actress whose Hollywood career has stalled. Eleazar is best known to many American viewers for her role in the terrific British spy series Slow Horses.
- The supporting cast is stacked with talented actors, including Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick, and Topher Grace.
What we don’t like:
- Reviews have been mixed, though many critics particularly praised Eleazar’s performance. Box-office, on the other hand, was a disaster. The film opened in limited release last month and tanked immediately. A24 quickly pulled it from theaters, and the film will hit Netflix on Monday. A very unusual trajectory for such a high-profile title.

AMERICAN DOCTOR – $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Director: Poh Si Teng
Synopsis: United by a shared oath to save lives, three American doctors—Palestinian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian—work in a besieged hospital in Gaza and return to the United States to fight for the patients and colleagues they left behind.
What we like:
- This film marks Poh Si Teng’s feature-documentary directorial debut. Her previous work includes the Oscar-nominated documentary short St. Louis Superman and the Emmy-winning documentary Patrice: The Movie.
- The documentary screened at numerous international festivals, including Sundance, CPH:DOX, Hot Docs, Full Frame and Sheffield DocFest. It also received several audience awards, including at Hot Docs and Full Frame.
- This will likely be a Best Documentary Feature Oscar contender. It currently holds a 100% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What we don’t like:
- It’s a gut-wrenching watch. The film shows the realities of emergency medicine under bombardment, including severely injured children, overwhelmed medical personnel, shortages of supplies and the difficult decisions doctors must make when resources are limited.
CRAWLERS – $14.99 Sale / TBD Sale
Cast: Matilda Lutz, Gary Stennette, Elena Sanz, Andrea Scott Méndez, Isabella Egizi, Sam Lucas Smith, Gregg Sulkin, Melina Matthews, William Miller, Lexey Salvador, Paul Tracey, Hal Rothwell, Chris Rogers, Lea Vivier, Estela Aniorte, Carlos Toca
Synopsis: When a deadly breed of flesh-eating arachnids is unleashed inside an apartment building, the tenants are quarantined. To survive the venomous onslaught, they must rely on Serena-their underappreciated building manager. She is the residents’ only hope for survival, but first, she must conquer her own deepest fears before the government takes drastic, lethal action.
What we like:
- This spider chiller is directed by Spanish filmmaker Ángel Gómez Hernández, who previously helmed 2019’s The Goya Murders and 2023’s The Boogeyman: Reincarnation.
- The film combines a mixture of real spiders, animatronic creatures and computer-generated effects. This combination helps give the spider sequences a physical, unsettling quality.
- The reviews for the film have been decent. It currently sits at 62% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, which is higher than we expected!
What we don’t like:
- The premise sounds very similar to the 2023 Shudder original Infested, which an effectively creepy spider thriller. Hard to see how Crawlers improves on that one.
HEART OF THE BEAST – $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental
Cast: Brad Pitt, J.K. Simmons, Anna Lambe
Synopsis: After a harrowing plane crash, Special Forces officer James Belmont (Brad Pitt) and his combat dog, Odin, find themselves stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Together, they are forced into a brutal fight for survival against the elements. From acclaimed filmmaker David Ayer, Heart of the Beast is an intense adventure thriller that explores the unbreakable bond between a man and his best friend as they face their greatest battle yet.
What we like:
- This survival thriller reunites Brad Pitt with director David Ayer. The two previously worked together on the 2014 World War II film Fury. Pitt and his Plan B production company also co-produced the film.
- Attention dog lovers (that includes us): The American Humane Society monitored the animal performances through its ‘No Animals Were Harmed’ program. Dangerous sequences involving explosions, vehicles, heights and simulated injuries used safety measures, stunt techniques and visual effects.
- Critics and audiences both gave the film high marks. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 84% Fresh Rating and a Popcorn Meter score that’s 95% positive.
What we don’t like:
- Reports surfaced that Pitt and director Ayer clashed heavily during post-production over the movie’s final shape. Pitt, who exercised significant control as both the lead actor and a full producer, pushed for structural adjustments. While the theatrical release was ultimately structured as “Ayer’s cut at heart,” it was deeply altered and reshaped by Pitt’s extensive creative inputs.
THE INCOMER – $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Cast: Domhnall Gleeson, Gayle Rankin, Grant O’Rourke, Emun Elliott, Michelle Gomez, John Hannah
Synopsis: On an Orkney isle, siblings Isla and Sandy hunt birds and talk to mythical beings while fighting off outsiders. Their lives change when Daniel, an awkward official, arrives to relocate them.
What we like:
- This eccentric British comedy-drama was written and directed by Louis Paxton. Paxton is an Edinburgh-born filmmaker, and The Incomer marks his first feature-length film as both writer and director.
- The film received the NEXT Innovator Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, which recognizes adventurous filmmaking. Other recent winners of that award include Zodiac Killer Project and Kokomo City.
- Comedian Trevor Noah and musician Moby are among the executive producers of the film.
What we don’t like:
- Despite strong reviews from critics (95% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), distributor Sumerian Pictures failed to attract many adventurous moviegoers. The film grossed only $215K at the domestic box-office.
OTHER MOMMY – $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental
Cast: Jessica Chastain, Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Sean Kaufman, and Karen Allen
Synopsis: A young girl, her family and their home are haunted by a sinister entity that is determined to take up residence inside her. But first, it needs to persuade her to let it in…
What we like:
- The supernatural horror thriller adapts the best-selling horror novel Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman. Malerman is also the author of Bird Box, which we all remember became a successful Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock.
- Filmmaker Rob Savage previously directed 2020’s Host, which ingeniously used a Zoom video call as the setting for a supernatural horror story during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also directed 2023’s The Boogeyman.
- The film was a nice success for Universal and Blumhouse Atomic. It has (to-date) grossed over $110M at the worldwide box-office.
What we don’t like:
- Critics and audiences pretty much rejected it. The film holds a 19% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and received a D+ CinemaScore from moviegoers.

PAN’S LABYRINTH – 20TH ANNIVERSARY 4K RESTORATION

AVEDON – Netflix
Director: Ron Howard
Synopsis: From world leaders to pop culture icons and international supermodels, Richard Avedon’s influence helped create the blueprint for our image-driven world. His photographs didn’t just reflect culture, they shaped it. Avedon traces the life and legacy of an artist who used photography to reinvent the world around him. Drawing on unprecedented access to his personal archives — never-before-seen stills, intimate behind-the-lens footage, and new interviews with his closest collaborators — the film explores how his singular eye both reflected and reshaped the visual language of the 20th century and why even the most iconic image is only half the story.
What we like:
- Oscar-winning director Ron Howard turns his attention to one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, Richard Avedon.
- Howard was granted unprecedented access to Avedon’s personal archives, including never-before-seen photographs, behind-the-scenes recordings and intimate footage of the photographer at work.
- The documentary received a special screening at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, and based on the handful of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, is supposed to be pretty good.
What we don’t like:
- Despite the good reviews, some critics have noted that the film is “fatally safe” and uncritical because of its close ties to the subject’s estate and foundation. It bypasses or glosses over darker, more complex personal chapters and disputed accounts of Avedon’s life.
THE GOSPEL OF CHRISTMAS – Netflix
Cast: Fantasia Barrino Taylor, Durrell “Tank” Babbs, Ricco Ross, Chanté Moore, John Gray, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Smokie Norful, Jekalyn Carr, Carl Lentz, Mason Douglas, Lauren Chanel, Eric Wiltz, The Legendary Clark Sisters (Twinkie Clark-Terrell, Karen Clark-Sheard, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Jacky Clark-Chisholm), Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Ann Nesby, Le’Andria Johnson, Hezekiah Walker, Dyon Brooks, Luenell, with Cece Winans and Shirley Caesar
Synopsis: In Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas, a struggling pastor inherits his family’s church in a broken New York neighborhood, but as he battles doubt, temptation, and a sinister adversary, he must rediscover his faith and the power of prayer to save his church, his family, and his community.
What we like:
- Tyler Perry, the hardest working man in showbiz, returns with his third Christmas-themed film. Perry has previously made 2013’s A Madea Christmas and 2025’s Finding Joy.
- Fantasia Barrino plays Rebecca, the supportive wife of pastor Isaac. She is best known for winning the third season of American Idol and starring in the 2023 musical film version of The Color Purple.
- Perry explained that the idea originated while listening to songs that had helped him through difficult periods in his life. He wanted to create a movie in which music played an important role in communicating faith, hope and perseverance.
What we don’t like:
- Unless Netflix is working overtime to conceal spoilers, it doesn’t look like Madea will be making an appearance in this one. We’ll miss her!

PAW PATROL: THE DINO MOVIE – Paramount+
Cast: Carter Young, Mckenna Grace, Terry Crews, Meredith MacNeill, Ron Pardo, Jennifer Hudson, Hayden Chemberlen, Fortune Feimster, Jameela Jamil, Rain Janjua, Bill Nye, Paris Hilton, Lucien Duncan-Reid, William Desrosiers, Nylan Parthipan, Snoop Dogg, and Henry Bolan
Synopsis: The PAW Patrol pups crash land on an uncharted tropical island filled with dinosaurs after their ship gets caught in a mysterious storm. They meet Rex, a pup who has been stranded on the island for years and has become an expert in all things dino-related. When the Patrol’s archrival, Mayor Humdinger, begins recklessly mining in hopes of exploiting the island for its natural resources, he inadvertently causes a huge, dormant volcano to erupt. The pups are thrown into a series of high-stakes, dino-sized rescues bigger than anything they’ve done before, as they must stop Humdinger before everything on the island goes extinct.
What we like:
- This three-quel follows 2021’s PAW Patrol: The Movie and 2023’s PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, and was directed by Cal Brunker, who also directed the previous two theatrical films. Cal Brunker…PAW Patrol auteurist!
- Brunker said the production team talked to dinosaur experts to understand how dinosaur bones and muscles worked. The goal was to make the prehistoric creatures move in a more authentic and believable way while still fitting into the stylized PAW Patrol world.
- Critics loved it! It currently has an 83% Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score.
What we don’t like:
- The Backstreet Boys contributed a new song, but don’t get your hopes up that the Boys have a shot at Oscar. The song was written by a team including Ed Sheeran, Johnny McDaid, Ilya Salmanzadeh and Savan Kotecha.

BEING HEUMANN – Apple TV
Cast: Ruth Madeley, Mark Ruffalo, Dylan O’Brien, Rob Delaney, Ray Fisher
Synopsis: Scrappy, defiant, and done being treated like a burden, Judy Heumann turns her outrage into a revolution. In 1977, she and more than 100 disability rights protestors send a very loud message: The system is broken—not us.
What we like:
- This historical drama is filmmaker Siân Heder’s follow-up to her 2021 Best Picture-winner CODA. The film is based on Judy Heumann’s 2020 autobiography Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist.
- Rather than casting an able-bodied actor for the lead role, Heder chose British actor Ruth Madeley to play Judy Heumann. Madeley was born with spina bifida, and has appeared in the series Years and Years and Dr. Who.
- The production made disability representation a priority. According to the Associated Press, the film assembled the largest ensemble cast of disabled actors ever brought together for a production.
What we don’t like:
- It’s not exactly a hot take to say we loathed CODA. We know many people did. Buy our aversion had more to do with its uneven tone and treacly sentimentality, not with its direction. We’re looking forward seeing this one (reviews have been strong!).
THE END OF OAK STREET – HBO Max
Cast: Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery
Synopsis: After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.
What we like:
- Writer-director David Robert Mitchell, who brought us the stone-cold classic It Follows and the ambitious Under the Silver Lake, returns to feature filmmaking after a long eight-year gap. It’s great to have him back.
- Mitchell has cited influences including The Twilight Zone, Poltergeist, Signs and Jurassic Park, which helps explain why the film has a strange, suspense-oriented tone rather than being a straightforward dinosaur action movie.
- The summer of Anne Hathaway continues, with the actress giving another standout performance. All the actors, including Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery, are great.
- Michael Giacchino’s music somehow evokes the classic Amblin/John Williams scores of the 1980s without ripping them off.
What we don’t like:
- We caught this in theaters and had an absolute blast. Too bad the box-office was only so-so, with a domestic total of $54M. That’s not great for a film that reportedly cost around $80M-$90M. We highly recommend checking it out now that it’s hitting HBO Max.
HEARTLAND – Netflix
Cast: Jessica Chastain, Garrett Hedlund, Carter Faith, Ross Lynch, Paul Sparks, Jennifer Nettles, John Hawkes
Synopsis: Former country megastar Misty Jones (Jessica Chastain) comes out of seclusion to investigate the disappearance of her missing niece, a rising country musician, and must grapple with her own past and Nashville’s seedy underbelly. Her search uncovers a murky side of Nashville where no one, including Misty, is who they seem.
What we like:
- Jessica Chastain’s second movie of the week is a country-music-infused mystery thriller directed and written by Shana Feste, who previously wrote and directed 2010’s Country Strong starring Gwyneth Paltrow.
- Chastain performs her own singing in the movie. She previously demonstrated her musical abilities playing Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye (for which she won her Oscar) and Tammy Wynette in the television miniseries George & Tammy. Sadly…she’s not named Tammy in this. She’s Misty Jones (not Misty Green).
- Jennifer Nettles plays Winnie Jo Lean (!), another country singer. Nettles is best known as one half of the Grammy-winning country duo Sugarland.
What we don’t like:
- No reviews yet, so we’re not sure if Feste is able to reach the melodramatic heights of Country Strong. We’re not excited by the poster, which makes Chastain look like a security guard at a country fair. We’re hoping for the best!
Happy Streaming Everyone!
