When To Stream’s Weekly Tracking Report

See this content in the original post

Welcome to When To Stream’s Weekly Tracking Report. Every Friday, we’ll break down the film titles whose first window streaming premieres are still not confirmed. This column will not examine second window SVOD premieres, though we’ll obviously still be tracking and reporting those.

One note: There are hundreds of new films every year, and we’re not able to track or highlight every single one. For now, we concentrate on major studio and indie distributor releases. If there are titles you’d like us to track, let us know in the comments. We’ll do our best to follow up, but might not have the bandwidth to spotlight fully.

Here are the film titles (in order of theatrical release) we are currently tracking:

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

Theatrical Release Date: July 28, 2023

Tracking: Reports indicate a Blu-ray release date in Japan is set for 2/28/24, so there’s hope a US release date is concurrent. We’re sticking with our estimate for now.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: February/March 2024

STOP MAKING SENSE

Theatrical Release Date: September 22, 2023

Tracking: With no announcement and no pre-order listing, it’s looking like a first quarter 2024 launch. It is a re-issue, so it’s possible A24 skips a PVOD release and jumps right to an SVOD premiere, maybe as part of their Max partnership. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen A24 announce a Stop Making Sense tribute album, and also the film will be returning to theaters. Doesn’t look like a streaming release is coming anytime soon, we’re pushing back our estimate.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD/SVOD Estimate: March 2024

STRANGE WAY OF LIFE

Theatrical Release Date: October 4, 2023

Tracking: Still no announcement from Sony Pictures Classics, and no pre-order available. The film did not get a nomination in the Best Live Action Short category when Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. Since it won’t be a part of the Oscar Shorts theatrical release, we imagine a streaming plan will be announced soon.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: February 2024

AFTER DEATH

Theatrical Release Date: October 27, 2023

Tracking: The film was released on PVOD on 1/24.

RADICAL

Theatrical Release Date: November 3, 2023

Tracking: The film is available to stream on the Spanish-language ViX platform, but no word yet on a PVOD release. We’ll continue to track.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: February 2024

ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY

Theatrical Release Date: November 10, 2023

Tracking: Janus keeps their films exclusively in theaters between 3 and 4 months. Criterion Channel released their programming highlights for February, and Orlando was not included. That’s not unusual, as they often hold their premiere announcements until closer to launch date. Holding on our estimate for now.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD/SVOD Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024 (Criterion Channel)

A STILL SMALL VOICE

Theatrical Release Date: November 10, 2023

Tracking: A Still Small Voice is being distributed by Abramorama Films, whose digital releases are all over the map. Though short listed, the film did not receive a nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category when Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. We imagine a streaming announcement will come soon.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Early/Mid February 2024

MENUS-PLASAIRS LES TROISGROS

Theatrical Release Date: November 22, 2023

Tracking: A PBS broadcast and streaming date of 3/22 was announced.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE

Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023

Tracking: Last week, Toho International announced a one-week remastered black-and-white version of the film would be released in theaters starting 1/26. The engagement is one-week only, with both the color and b/w versions ending their theatrical runs on 2/1. We hope this means a streaming release date announcement is imminent, but Toho has a reputation for holding back their releases for a long time. Still, the film was such a monster hit, it would be unusual not to try to maximize revenue while it’s still top of mind. The film did receive an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects!

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Late February 2024

RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCE

Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023

Tracking: With Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour announcing a PVOD debut after a 60-day theatrical window, we have a bit of a template for AMC Theaters’s distribution arm. We’re thinking Queen Bey got the same deal. Hoping for some news in the next week or two.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Early February 2024

THE SHIFT

Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023

Tracking: Angel Studios has made The Shift available on their streaming platform, but only for their ‘Angel Investors.’ With After Death now on PVOD, we expect The Shift’s date to be a bit later next month.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Late February 2024

ANSELM

Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023

Tracking: Wim Wenders’ first of two film this winter (PERFECT DAYS will come in February 2024) is best experienced in 3D. Janus Films will likely keep this in theaters as long as they can, as they should. We don’t expect any sort of streaming release until Spring 2024.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD/SVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024 (Criterion Channel)

THE BOY AND THE HERON

Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023

Tracking: Although it’s was screening in limited release for a few weeks, we’re treating 12/8 as its proper release date. As with most GKIDS releases, it’s likely to have a long theatrical-exclusive window. The film did become available for pre-order on iTunes, so there’s hope an earlier launch is planned. We’ve adjusted our estimate a bit to reflect.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($19.99)

PVOD Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024

POOR THINGS

Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023

Tracking: Expanding to 2300 screens this weekend (+890), this is likely the widest Poor Things will go (unless it wins Best Picture, which seems unlikely). Still no pre-order, so we’re going to push back our estimate a bit closer to the Oscars.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Early March 2024

WONKA

Theatrical Release Date: December 15, 2023

Tracking: A PVOD release date of 1/30 has been announced.

AMERICAN FICTION

Theatrical Release Date: December 15, 2023

Tracking: Hoping to capitalize on its 5 Oscar nominations, American Fiction expands to 1,702 theaters this weekend (+852). The film became available for pre-order this week, so we’re adjusting our estimate, pushing it up a bit. Amazon MGM has been aggressive with their PVOD strategy. Looks like they’re getting ready to pull the trigger on this one.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($19.99)

PVOD Estimate: Early February 2024

THE ZONE OF INTEREST

Theatrical Release Date: December 15, 2023

Tracking: Expanding to more cities every week, we think A24 will be in it for the long haul. Oscar nominations are likely, and the indie has shown patience with even their smallest titles. This one will take its sweet time to get to streaming.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024

ALL OF US STRANGERS

Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023

Tracking: Zero Oscar nominations means the box-office prospects for All of Us Strangers is limited. The film will continue to expand a bit, but likely will shift to digital in the next month or so. A shame.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Early March 2024

ANYONE BUT YOU

Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023

Tracking: We’re happy Sony is giving the film a chance to thrive theatrically, as it’s been a long time since we’ve had a break out rom-com. The film keeps pulling in audiences, and we’re thinking Sony might want to keep it going in theaters through Valentine’s Day. We’re pushing back our estimate.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024

FREUD’S LAST SESSION

Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023

Tracking: Sony Pictures Classics took this title semi-wide last weekend, and the box-office was pretty mediocre. We still don’t think SPC will fast track it to PVOD, so we’re sticking to our estimate for now.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD Estimate: Late March 2024

THE IRON CLAW

Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023

Tracking: A24’s family wrestling drama is one of A24’s top performing tiles of 2023. Word of mouth is positive, so here’s hoping it’s able to maintain its theater count for a few more weeks. Still no pre-order available, so for now, we’re sticking with our estimate.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Late February 2024

See this content in the original post

MEMORY

Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023

Tracking: No Oscar nomination for Memory, though no pre-order or streaming announcement yet. We’re anticipating we’ll hear some news in the next week or two. Pushing back our estimate a bit.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Mid February 2024

OCCUPIED CITY

Theatrical Release Date: December 25, 2023

Tracking: Steve McQueen’s 4-hour documentary hasn’t received much attention from awards bodies, and A24 has yet to report any grosses from its limited opening. We’re thinking the distributor will take its time rolling it out nationally, so no digital or PVOD date anytime soon. In fact, it might be a good candidate for a premiere on HBO/Max in the coming months. We’ll see.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: March 2024

THE TEACHER’S LOUNGE

Theatrical Release Date: December 25, 2023

Tracking: Sony Pictures Classics got the Oscar nomination it was looking for, as The Teacher’s Lounge was nominated for Best International Feature. Look for an aggressive theatrical roll out in the coming weeks. We’re holding on our estimate.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD Estimate: Late March 2024

See this content in the original post

THE BEEKEEPER

Theatrical Release Date: January 12, 2024

Tracking: A PVOD date of 1/30 is expected. Amazon MGM has neither announced or confirmed the date.

THE BOOK OF CLARENCE

Theatrical Release Date: January 12, 2024

Tracking: Sony’s satirical biblical comedy/drama did very little business in its wide release in the last two weeks. We’re anticipating a quick pivot to PVOD, and expect an announcement in the next week or two. Still no pre-order.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Early February 2024

MEAN GIRLS (2024)

Theatrical Release Date: January 12, 2024

Tracking: Paramount’s musical comedy is a big hit in theaters and continues to perform well. Still, the studio has been very consistent with its non-Tom Cruise titles, sticking to a 30-day theatrical window. We have no reason to think that strategy will change for Mean Girls.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($24.99)

PVOD Estimate: February 13, 2024

See this content in the original post

THE SETTLERS

Theatrical Release Date: January 12, 2024

Tracking: Chile’s entry for the Best International Feature Oscar was not short listed, but we’re still anticipating MUBI will give the film a proper two month theatrical window. Look for it to hit SVOD in mid-March.

Pre-Order Availability: No

SVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024 (MUBI US)

FOUNDERS DAY

Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024

Tracking: Distributor Dark Sky Films is handling this one, and their films usually have a quick pivot to VOD/EST. We’re estimating a short window.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Early February 2024

I.S.S.

Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024

Tracking: Bleecker Street’s wide release did not set the box-office on fire, but it’s still set to be one of the distributor’s highest grossing titles in years. We’re expecting a quick pivot to PVOD, so we’re holding on our estimate.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($24.99)

PVOD Estimate: Early February 2024

INSIDE THE YELLOW COCOON SHELL

Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024

Tracking: This Kino Lorber release will roll out slowly in arthouse theaters, and then likely hit VOD/EST in late winter.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/EST Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024

ORIGIN

Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024

Tracking: No Oscar nominations for Ava DuVernay’s drama, so unless it catching on quickly with audiences in theaters, we’re expecting a digital release in a few weeks. Holding on our estimate for now.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($14.99)

VOD/EST Estimate: Mid February 2024

MILLER’S GIRL

Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024

Tracking: Lionsgate is only taking this out in about 500 theaters this weekend. The reviews have been pretty brutal, look for a quick PVOD pivot in the next few weeks.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Mid February 2024

See this content in the original post

THE PEASANTS

Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024

Tracking: No nominations for Best International Feature or Animated Feature for this Sony Pictures Classics release. Still, the distributor has held firm on its 90-day theatrical window. Our estimate reflects The Peasants will follow suit.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Late April 2024

SOMETIMES I THINK ABOUT DYING

Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024

Tracking: Oscilloscope is opening this 2023 Sundance title in limited release this weekend, and we expect it’ll have a quiet run before hitting digital in a few weeks.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($14.99)

PVOD Estimate: Early March 2024

TOTEM

Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024

Tracking: This Mexican import was Spirit Award nominated, so hopes were high it would get a Best International Feature nomination (it did not). Distributor Sideshow will likely follow their usual playbook: slow, steady roll out with at least a 90-day window to PVOD/SVOD.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD/SVOD Estimate: Late April 2024 (Criterion Channel)
