When to Stream’s Weekly Tracking Report

Welcome to When To Stream’s Weekly Tracking Report. Every Friday, we’ll break down the film titles whose first window streaming premieres are still not confirmed. This column will not examine second window SVOD premieres, though we’ll obviously still be tracking and reporting those.

One note: There are hundreds of new films every year, and we’re not able to track or highlight every single one. For now, we concentrate on major studio and indie distributor releases. If there are titles you’d like us to track, let us know in the comments. We’ll do our best to follow up, but might not have the bandwidth to spotlight fully.

Here are the film titles (in order of theatrical release) we are currently tracking:

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

Theatrical Release Date: July 28, 2023

Tracking: Look…we’re kinda throwing our hands up in the air on this one. No indication of a streaming date. We have a feeling it’ll just pop-up on digital platforms one of these days.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: March 2024??

Theatrical Release Date: September 22, 2023

Tracking: A24 announced they will release a Stop Making Sense: Deluxe Collector’s Edition on 4K Blu-ray, which will cost a whopping $53. No street date announced, but it is expected to ship in May. We imagine the restored film will become available digitally at the same time. We’re pushing back our estimate to then.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD/SVOD Estimate: May 2024

Theatrical Release Date: November 10, 2023

Tracking: A Still Small Voice is being distributed by Abramorama Films, whose digital releases are all over the map. Though short listed, the film did not receive a nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category when Oscar nominations were announced. We imagine a streaming announcement will come soon.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD Estimate: Mid/Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023

Tracking: With the film’s theatrical run over, we keep hoping a streaming release date announcement is imminent. Toho International has a reputation for holding back their releases for a long time. The film was such a monster hit, it would be unusual not to try to maximize revenue while it’s still top of mind. But with no pre-order available, we have no indication it’s coming any time soon.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Late March 2024?

Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023

Tracking: Still no word on streaming plans for this concert film. We’re hoping some kind of announcement is imminent, even if it’s a direct-to-SVOD deal. The lack of pre-order doesn’t give us much confidence we’ll see this soon. We’re pushing back our estimate for now.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Mid/Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023

Tracking: The film became available for digital sale last week.

Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023

Tracking: Wim Wenders’ first of two films this winter (PERFECT DAYS arrived last month) is best experienced in 3D. Janus Films/Sideshow will likely keep this in theaters as long as they can, as they should. We expect a streaming date to be announced soon.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/SVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024 (Criterion Channel)

Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023

Tracking: It’s looking unlikely this will hit digital before the Oscars. As with Godzilla Minus One and The First Slam Dunk, it could suddenly pop up on digital without any advance word. We’re holding on our estimate for now.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($19.99)

VOD Estimate: Late March/Early April 2024

Theatrical Release Date: December 25, 2023

Tracking: Sony Pictures Classics got the Oscar nomination it was looking for, as The Teacher’s Lounge was nominated for Best International Feature. Look for an aggressive theatrical roll out in the coming weeks, with no sign it will be available on digital before the Oscars. We’re holding on our estimate.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD Estimate: Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: January 12, 2024

Tracking: A MUBI US launch date of 3/29 was announced.

Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024

Tracking: Distributor Dark Sky Films is handling this one, and their films usually have a quick pivot to VOD/Digital. Still no announcement or pre-order, we’re pushing back our estimate a bit.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Mid/Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024

Tracking: NEON re-released this in theaters for a one-night event screening this week, including a Q&A with Ava DuVernay. It seemed like a final push before a digital announcement.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($14.99)

VOD/Digital Estimate: Mid March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024

Tracking: No nominations for Best International Feature or Animated Feature for this Sony Pictures Classics release. The distributor seems to be getting a bit more flexible on its 90-day windowing, so we’re actually moving up our estimate on this a bit.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/Digital Estimate: Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024

Tracking: This Mexican import was Spirit Award nominated, so hopes were high it would get a Best International Feature nomination (it did not). Distributor Janus Films/Sideshow will likely follow their usual playbook: slow, steady roll out with at least a 90-day window to PVOD/SVOD.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/Digital/SVOD Estimate: Late April 2024 (Criterion Channel)

Theatrical Release Date: February 2, 2024

Tracking: A PVOD release date on 3/5 is expected.

Theatrical Release Date: February 2, 2024

Tracking: Indie distributor Big World Pictures is handling this Franz Rogowski drama, and we don’t have much tracking info on their releases. For now, we’re estimating at least a 45-day window.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/Digital Estimate: Mid/Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024

Tracking: Roadside Attractions is handling distribution, and their releases usually pivot to PVOD after three weeks. This one looks to be taking longer. Pushing back our estimate accordingly.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/Digital Estimate: Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024

Tracking: Utopia is handling distribution on this Cynthia Erivo-starring indie. Their films usually take at least 45-days to reach digital. We think this one should follow suit.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($19.99)

VOD/Digital Estimate: Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024

Tracking: The film was released on VOD/Digital on 2/27.

Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024

Tracking: IFC Films acclaimed drama opened incredibly well in limited release. It went wider on Valentine’s Day, but didn’t really break-out as much as we hoped it would. The film continues to lose theaters this weekend, so we imagine a digital release announcement will come soon.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/Digital Estimate: Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 14, 2024

Tracking: Paramount’s Bob Marley biopic opened very well on Valentine’s Day, and is chugging towards a possible $100M domestic gross. Still, they’ve put up a pre-order priced for PVOD, so we imagine they’ll stick to their 30-day theatrical exclusivity playbook.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($24.99)

PVOD Estimate: March 19, 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 14, 2024

Tracking: Sony has been the studio to show the most window-flexibility with their releases. This one looks to be underperforming, but we think they’ll still hold off on a digital release for at least 45 days. No pre-order yet.

Pre-Order Availability: No

PVOD Estimate: Late March/Early April 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 23, 2024

Tracking: This Janus Films/Sideshow release will likely have the same theatrical exclusivity as their other titles, which means a 90-day window. Look for it on digital and the Criterion Channel around Memorial Day.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/SVOD Estimate: Late May 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 23, 2024

Tracking: Another Focus Features release that is likely to hit PVOD in 18 days. The film’s lackluster box-office gives us no indication the studio will shift its strategy.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($29.99)

PVOD Estimate: March 12, 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 23, 2024

Tracking: Cohen Media is releasing this Best International Feature nominee in theaters quite close to the Oscars. We doubt it’ll hit digital before the March 10th ceremony. We’re estimating at least a 45-day window.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/Digital Estimate: Early/Mid April 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 23, 2024

Tracking: We’re estimating Lionsgate will give this title at least a month in theaters before it hits digital, where the pre-order price indicates it will be offered for PVOD.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($24.99)

PVOD Estimate: Late March 2024

Theatrical Release Date: February 23, 2024

Tracking: Sony Pictures Classics will most likely slowly roll-out this adult animated feature, with a 90-day window as the playbook.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD Estimate: Late May 2024

Theatrical Release Date: March 1, 2024

Tracking: Likely to be the biggest film of the Spring, we’re estimating Warner Bros will keep it in theaters exclusively for at least 45 days. It’s priced for PVOD, so a mid-April launch feels right.

Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($29.99)

PVOD Estimate: Mid April 2024

Theatrical Release Date: March 1, 2024

Tracking: In limited release starting today, then going wide 3/22. We’re estimating A24 will follow their usual ~60-day theatrical exclusivity for this title.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/Digital Estimate: Late April/Early May

Theatrical Release Date: March 1, 2024

Tracking: Sony Pictures Classics has started to pull-back on their 90-day windows. We’re estimating this title will hit digital a little earlier than usual.

Pre-Order Availability: No

VOD/Digital Estimate: Early/Mid May 2024

Next week we’ll begin tracking:
