Welcome to When To Stream’s super-sized monthly preview! We’re here to give you an overview of the top streaming titles (including PVOD, Digital, and SVOD) expected in January 2025, and also give a glimpse at the films we expect to launch this month, but have not yet been announced.

DON’T DIE: THE MAN WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER (Netflix)
Synopsis: In this documentary, wealthy entrepreneur Bryan Johnson puts his body and fortune on the line to defy aging and extend his life beyond all known limits.
Fun Fact: Tech entrepreneur Johnson, his father, and son Talmage, took part in the first “multi-generational” plasma exchange, which is shown in the documentary.
SLINGSHOT (Paramount+ w/Showtime)
Synopsis: An elite trio of astronauts aboard a years-long, possibly compromised mission to Saturn's moon Titan, gears up for a highly dangerous slingshot manoeuvre that will either catapult them to Titan or into deep space.
Fun Fact: Director Mikael Håfström’s 2003 film Evil was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. It lost to the Canadian film The Barbarian Invasions.

THE FALL GUY (Prime Video)
Synopsis: Fresh off an almost career-ending accident, stuntman Colt Seavers has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job.
Fun Fact: Blake Shelton performs a modernized cover version of the song "The Unknown Stuntman" during the end credits. This was the theme song of the 1980s TV show The Fall Guy (1981), where it was performed by star Lee Majors, who sang about being "the unknown stuntman, who made Eastwood look so fine." The updated version removes all now-dated references to actors of the 1970s and 1980s.

THE FRONT ROOM (Max)
Synopsis: Everything goes to hell for newly-pregnant Belinda after her mother-in-law moves in. As the diabolical guest tries to get her claws on the child, Belinda must draw the line somewhere.
Fun Fact: Co-directors Max and Sam Eggers are twins, and the younger brothers of Nosferatu director Robert Eggers.
MOTHERS’ INSTINCT (Hulu)
Synopsis: Housewives Alice and Celine are best friends and neighbours who seem to have it all. However, when a tragic accident shatters the harmony of their lives, guilt, suspicion and paranoia begin to unravel their sisterly bond.
Fun Fact: This is the third movie starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, following Interstellar (2014) and Armageddon Time (2022). However, this is the first time they share any scenes.
SKINCARE (AMC+)
Synopsis: Famed aesthetician Hope Goldman is about to take her career to the next level by launching her very own skin care line. However, she soon faces a new challenge when a rival opens a boutique directly across from her store. Suspecting that someone is trying to sabotage her, she embarks on a quest to unravel the mystery of who's trying to destroy her life.
Fun Fact: The film was loosely inspired by the case of Dawn DaLuise, who was arrested and later acquitted for a murder-for-hire plot against a rival beauty guru.
WALLACE & GROMIT: VENGEANCE MOST FOWL (Netflix)
Synopsis: Gromit’s concern that Wallace is becoming too dependent on his inventions proves justified, when Wallace invents a “smart” gnome that seems to develop a mind of its own. When it emerges that a vengeful figure from the past might be masterminding things, it falls to Gromit to battle sinister forces and save his master… or Wallace may never be able to invent again!
Sad Fact: This marks the first new Wallace & Gromit film since the death of Wallace's voice actor from the previous 5 films, Peter Sallis, in 2017.

BLACK BOX DIARIES (Paramount+ w/Showtime)
Synopsis: Journalist Shiori Itō embarks on a courageous investigation of her own sexual assault in an improbable attempt to prosecute her high-profile offender. Her quest becomes a landmark case in Japan, exposing the country’s outdated judicial and societal systems.
Fun Fact: The film was named one of the top 5 documentaries of 2024 by the National Board of Review.
FLOW (VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: A solitary cat, displaced by a great flood, finds refuge on a boat with various species and must navigate the challenges of adapting to a transformed world together.
Fun Fact: There are no words spoken in the film, only the animals' respective sounds.
SOUNDTRACK TO A COUP D’ETAT (VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: In 1960, United Nations: the Global South ignites a political earthquake, musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach crash the Security Council, Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe denouncing America’s color bar, while the U.S. dispatches jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to the Congo to deflect attention from its first African post-colonial coup.
Fun Fact: One of director Johan Grimonprez’s inspirations for making the film was his fascination with Nikita Khrushchev's shoe-banging incident, where the Russian leader pounded his shoe on his delegate-desk in protest at the United Nations in 1960.

GET AWAY (Shudder, AMC+, VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: A family's vacation to a remote getaway takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they're on is inhabited by a serial killer.
Fun Fact: Although the film takes place in Sweden, it was actually shot in Finland.
LOOK INTO MY EYES (Max)
Synopsis: A group of New York City psychics conduct deeply intimate readings for their clients, revealing a kaleidoscope of loneliness, connection, and healing.
Fun Fact: The film was named one of the top 5 documentaries of 2024 by the National Board of Review.

MY NAME IS ALFRED HITCHCOCK (VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: Directed by Mark Cousins, My Name is Alfred Hitchcock re-examines the vast filmography and legacy of one of the 20th century’s greatest filmmakers, Alfred Hitchcock, through a new lens: through the auteur’s own voice.
Fun Fact: Director Mark Cousins is best known for his 15-hour 2011 documentary The Story of Film: An Odyssey.
MY PENGUIN FRIEND (Hulu)
Synopsis: A lost penguin rescued from an oil spill transforms the life of a heartbroken fisherman. They become unlikely friends, so bonded that even the vast ocean cannot divide them.
Fun Fact: This film is based on the true story of Brazilian fisherman João Pereira de Souza and Dindim the penguin, which went viral in 2016.
RED ROOMS (Shudder, AMC+)
Synopsis: The high-profile case of serial killer Ludovic Chevalier has just gone to trial, and Kelly-Anne is obsessed. When reality blurs with her morbid fantasies, she goes down a dark path to seek the final piece of the case’s puzzle.
Fun Fact: Director Pascal Plante was inspired by serial killer groupies, who are often seen supporting the killers at their trials.

Synopsis: Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily and Matt are pulled back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown.
Fun Fact: This is Cameron Diaz's first film following her retirement in 2014; her previous film was Annie (2014), which also co-starred Jamie Foxx.
A DIFFERENT MAN (Max)
Synopsis: Aspiring actor Edward undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare, as he loses out on the role he was born to play and becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost.
Fun Fact: The film was awarded Best Feature at the 2024 Gotham Awards.
MEMOIR OF A SNAIL (AMC+)
Synopsis: Forcibly separated from her twin brother when they are orphaned, a melancholic misfit learns how to find confidence within herself amid the clutter of misfortunes and everyday life.
Fun Fact: Magda Szubanski, who voices the homophobic character Ruth in the film, is in reality a lesbian and an ardent LGBT rights activist. She also played the farmer’s wife in 1995’s Babe.

BLINK TWICE (Prime Video)
Synopsis: When tech billionaire Slater King meets cocktail waitress Frida at his fundraising gala, he invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. But despite the epic setting, beautiful people, ever-flowing champagne, and late-night dance parties, Frida can sense that there’s something sinister hiding beneath the island’s lush façade.
Fun Fact: Zoë Kravitz started writing Blink Twice under the original working title Pussy Island in 2017, and intended to keep title for the film. But negative reception from the MPA, women, and theaters led to her change it.
OH, CANADA (VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: Famed Canadian-American leftist documentary filmmaker Leonard Fife was one of sixty thousand draft evaders and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid serving in Vietnam. Now in his late seventies, Fife is dying of cancer in Montreal and has agreed to a final interview in which he is determined to bare all his secrets at last, to demythologize his mythologized life.
Fun Fact: This marks the second collaboration between actor Richard Gere and director Paul Schrader, who first worked together on 1980’s American Gigolo.
SLEEP (Hulu)
Synopsis: Hyun-su and Soo-jin have just gotten married. Seemingly out of nowhere, he starts talking in his sleep. 'Someone’s inside.' From that night forward, whenever he falls asleep, he transforms into someone else with no recollection of the night before. Soo-jin is overwhelmed with anxiety that he’d hurt her family while she sleeps and can barely sleep a wink because of this irrational fear. Despite sleep treatment, Hyun-su’s sleepwalking only intensifies, and she begins to feel that her unborn child may be in danger...
Sad Fact: This is the final film role of Parasite actor Lee Sun-kyun before his passing in December 2023.
YOU GOTTA BELIEVE (Netflix)
Synopsis: After dedicating the season to a teammate’s ailing father, a group of underestimated Ft. Worth youth baseball players takes its Cinderella run all the way to the 2002 Little League World Series—culminating in a record-breaking showdown that became an instant ESPN classic.
Fun Fact: The ballpark used in the movie is Labatt Memorial Park in London, Ontario, Canada. It is the oldest continually-operating baseball ground in the world, with a history dating back to 1877.

CITY OF DREAMS (Hulu)
Synopsis: A Mexican teenager whose dreams of becoming a soccer star are disrupted when his mother dies. He's smuggled across the border with the promise of a better life but is instead sold to a sweatshop in downtown LA.
Fun Fact: Roma Oscar-nominee Yalitza Aparicio is an executive producer on the film.

GHOST CAT ANZU (VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: Precocious tween Karin finds herself abandoned by her father in rural Japan. Living in a temple with her grandfather, she meets Anzu, a giant "ghost cat" and notorious layabout tasked with looking after her. Distrustful of her new guardian, Karin sabotages Anzu's odd jobs for the townsfolk and befriends the eccentric local forest spirits. In an effort to win Karin over, Anzu accidentally makes a deal with the devil, and all Hell breaks loose.
Fun Fact: The film world premiered in the Director’s Fortnight section of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
