Welcome to When To Stream’s super-sized monthly preview! We’re here to give you an overview of the top streaming titles (including PVOD, Digital, and SVOD) expected in August 2024, and also give a glimpse at the films we expect to launch this month, but have not yet been announced.

THE BEAST (The Criterion Channel)
Synopsis: In the near future where emotions have become a threat, Gabrielle finally decides to purify her DNA in a machine that will immerse her in her past lives and rid her of any strong feelings. She then meets Louis and feels a powerful connection, as if she had known him forever.
Fun Fact: The film ends with a QR code that encodes the URL of a video of the film's credits roll, in lieu of having closing credits itself. DIrector Bertrand Bonello made this decision during the editing. He said it was because he wanted to evoke the "brutality" of old films that did not have end credits, and because it "fit well with the dehumanization of the film at that moment in 2044."
GODZILLA MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR (Netflix)
Synopsis: In postwar Japan, Godzilla brings new devastation to an already scorched landscape. With no military intervention or government help in sight, the survivors must join together in the face of despair and fight back against an unrelenting horror.
Fun Fact: This is the first Godzilla movie to be a period piece, set during the American submission of Japan and almost a decade before the original Godzilla (1954)
TAROT (Netflix)
Synopsis: When a group of friends recklessly violate the sacred rule of Tarot readings, they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death.
Fun Fact: Co-director (w/ Anna Halberg) Spenser Cohen co-wrote the script for the kooky 2022 Roland Emmerich killer moon film Moonfall.

KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (Hulu)
Synopsis: Several generations following Caesar's reign, apes – now the dominant species – live harmoniously while humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all he's known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Fun Fact: Director Wes Ball's pitch for the film was "Apocalypto (2006) with apes."
MAXXXINE (PVOD)
Synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.
Fun Fact: Mia Goth is the granddaughter of Brazilian actress Maria Gladys. As Goth became more popular in Brazil, marketing for Maxxxine in Brazil exploited the connection and "The granddaughter of Brazilian actress Maria Gladys" succeeded Goth's name whenever it was mentioned while promoting the movie.
REBEL MOON - THE DIRECTOR’S CUT (Netflix)
Synopsis: In Snyder’s director’s cut, a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, and Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Motherworld, Kora assembles a small band of warriors - outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a new army of heroes is formed.
Fun Fact: During an appearance on the “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, director Zack Snyder said that he estimates more people watched Rebel Moon than Barbie.
SAVING BIKINI BOTTOM: THE SANDY CHEEKS MOVIE (Netflix)
Synopsis: When Bikini Bottom is scooped from the ocean, scientific squirrel Sandy Cheeks and her pal SpongeBob SquarePants saddle up for Texas to save their town.
Fun Fact: The film's release year 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) as well as the 25th anniversary of the SpongeBob SquarePants (1999) TV show.
THE VOURDALAK (VOD/Digital - Sale Rental)
Synopsis: Lost in a hostile forest, the Marquis d'Urfé, a noble emissary of the King of France, finds refuge in the home of a strange family.
Fun Fact: The film is based on the 1839 Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy's gothic novella The Family of the Vourdalak.

ONE LIFE (Paramount+ w/Showtime)
Synopsis: British stockbroker Nicholas Winton visits Czechoslovakia in the 1930s and forms plans to assist in the rescue of Jewish children before the onset of World War II, in an operation that came to be known as the Kindertransport.
Fun Fact: The Popes are back together! The film reunites Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce after both received Oscar nominations for The Two Popes (2019).

DESPICABLE ME 4 (PVOD)
Synopsis: Gru and Lucy and their girls — Margo, Edith and Agnes — welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Meanwhile, Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, forcing the family to go on the run.
Fun Fact: According to film director Chris Renaud, Despicable Me 5 is "possible" if a fresh story can be crafted for the franchise's future.

DANDELION (VOD/Digital - Sale/Rental)
Synopsis: It follows a singer-songwriter in a downward spiral as she takes a last effort gig at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota where she meets Casey, a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago.
Fun Fact: Lead actress and Executive Producer KiKi Layne will soon be seen in the action sequel The Old Guard 2.
ONE FAST MOVE (Prime Video)
Synopsis: A dishonorably discharged soldier seeks out his estranged father to help him pursue his dream of becoming a professional motorcycle racer. While training, he meets a small-town, aspiring singer and a motorcycle shop owner who begin to break down the walls his father’s absence had built up.
Fun Fact: Legendary character actor Edward Jame Olmos, Oscar nominated for 1988’s Stand and Deliver, has a supporting role in the film.

THE BIKERIDERS (Peacock)
Synopsis: After a chance encounter, headstrong Kathy is drawn to Benny, member of Midwestern motorcycle club the Vandals. As the club transforms into a dangerous underworld of violence, Benny must choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club.
Fun Fact: This is Jeff Nichols' sixth collaboration with Michael Shannon.
FORCE OF NATURE: THE DRY 2 (AMC+)
Synopsis: When five women take part in a corporate hiking retreat and only four come out on the other side, Federal Agents Aaron Falk and Carmen Cooper head deep into the Victorian mountain ranges to investigate in the hopes of finding their whistle-blowing informant, Alice Russell, alive.
Fun Fact: This is Deborra-Lee Furness’, the ex-Mrs. Hugh Jackman, first film since 2010’s Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.
GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE (VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: For his next project, successful music producer Frank Farian hires dancers Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan and helps the two friends to a skyrocketing success, under the name Milli Vanilli. Only a small circle of insiders know their secret: the duo don't sing themselves, they just move their lips - to the voices of the real singers. At the height of their fame, Milli Vanilli threatens to become the biggest scandal in music history.
(Not) Fun Fact: The movie is dedicated to the late Rob Pilatus, who died on April 2, 1998 in Frankfurt, Germany. He was 33.
THE INSTIGATORS (Apple TV+)
Synopsis: Rory and Cobby are unlikely partners thrown together for a heist. But when it goes awry, they team up to outrun police, backward bureaucrats, and a vengeful crime boss.
Fun Fact: This is Matt Damon’s first film to go straight to a streaming platform. Yes, yes, it’s getting a perfunctory theatrical release. But this is straight to streaming.

FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA - BLACK & CHROME EDITION (VOD/Digital - Sale Only)
Synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
Fun Fact: George Miller revealed that he has another Mad Max story, tentatively titled "The Wasteland," ready to go, depending on the success of Furiosa.
MOTHERS’ INSTINCT (VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: Alice and Celine are inseparable and share everything, from their daily routines to their secrets. Their perfect harmony is shattered when one of their sons dies in a tragic accident while under Alice’s care. Celine blames Alice for the death of her child and becomes obsessed with protecting her surviving son from any harm. Alice, on the other hand, feels guilty and paranoid that Celine is plotting to harm her and her family. A gripping battle of wills ensues as the two women spiral into madness and violence.
Fun Fact: This is the third movie starring Oscar-winners Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway after Interstellar (2014) and Armageddon Time (2022). However, this is the first in which they share scenes.
WATCHMEN: CHAPTER 1 (VOD/Digital)
Synopsis: In an alternate world history shaped by superheroes, once-celebrated "costumed adventurers" have been banned by a society disenchanted with vigilantism. Now, in 1985, the murder of The Comedian, a hero-turned-government operative, draws the attention of Rorschach, the last of the outlawed vigilantes. Rorschach’s investigation embroils his retired colleagues, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias, in conflict with their pasts, with each other and in a mystery that threatens their lives and a world on the brink of war.
Fun Fact: Director Brandon Vietti previously directed Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery.

Synopsis: Four young girls prepare for a special Daddy Daughter Dance with their incarcerated fathers, as part of a unique fatherhood program in a Washington, D.C., jail.
Fun Fact: The film won the US Documentary Audience Award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
LA CHIMERA (Hulu)
Synopsis: Just out of jail, crumpled English archaeologist Arthur reconnects with his wayward crew of tombaroli accomplices – a happy-go-lucky collective of itinerant grave-robbers who survive by looting Etruscan tombs and fencing the ancient treasures they dig up.
Fun Fact: Josh O'Connor filmed the first half of La Chimera prior to filming his role as Patrick Zweig in Challengers, then returned to Italy to complete the second half.

JACKPOT! (Prime Video)
Synopsis: In the near future, a 'Grand Lottery' has been newly established in California - the catch: kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot. When Katie Kim moves to Los Angeles, she mistakenly finds herself with the winning ticket. Desperate to survive, she reluctantly joins forces with amateur lottery protection agent Noel Cassidy.

Synopsis: An American nun embarks on a new journey when she joins a remote convent in the Italian countryside. However, her warm welcome quickly turns into a living nightmare when she discovers her new home harbours a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors.
Fun Fact: Sydney Sweeney auditioned for this film in 2014 when she was 17. But the project never materialized. Years later, she took on the role of a producer and reached out to the writer, acquired and revised the script, hired a director, found financiers, and sold the film to NEON.

Synopsis: In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. In an attempt to provoke Europe, refugees are lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage to the EU. Synopsis: In Louisville, Kentucky, hairdresser Sharon Stevens rallies the masses to help widowed father Ed Schmitt save his critically ill 5 year old daughter Michelle after their community is hit by a major snowstorm from the 1994 North American cold wave.
Fun Fact: Dave Matthews is one of the producers of the film. He also contributed to the soundtrack.
STRESS POSITIONS (Hulu)
Synopsis: Terry Goon is keeping strict quarantine in his ex-husband’s Brooklyn brownstone while caring for his nephew — a 19-year-old model from Morocco named Bahlul — bedridden in a full leg cast after an electric scooter accident. Unfortunately for Terry, everyone in his life wants to meet the model.
Fun Fact: The film won the Sundance Institute/Amazon MGM Studios Producers Award for Fiction at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

THE KILLER (Peacock)
Synopsis: Zee is a feared contract killer known as "the Queen of the Dead," but when she refuses to murder a young blind woman, she finds herself hunted both by criminal colleagues and a determined police detective.
Fun Fact: Co-writer Brian Helgeland won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for his work on 1997’s LA Confidential.

Synopsis: Lia, a retired school teacher living in Georgia, hears from a young neighbour Achi that her long lost niece Tekla, a transgender woman, has crossed the border into Turkey. Hoping to bring Tekla home after a period of estrangement, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi to find her. Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search.
Fun Fact: The film won the Jury Award at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.
THE DELIVERANCE (Netflix)
Synopsis: A family living in a home in Indiana discover strange, demonic occurrences that convince them and the community that the house is a portal to hell.
Fun Fact: Andra Day reunites with the director who guided her to an Oscar nomination, Lee Daniels.
THE FALL GUY (Peacock)]
Synopsis: Fresh off an almost career-ending accident, stuntman Colt Seavers has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job.
Fun Fact: The extended edition of the film, which runs 20 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, will also debut on Peacock on 8/30.
GHOSTLIGHT (AMC+)
Synopsis: When a construction worker unexpectedly joins a local theater's production of Romeo and Juliet alongside his estranged teenage daughter, the drama onstage starts to mirror his own life.
Fun Fact: The woman who greets Daisy in the bathroom mid-performance is actor Deanna Dunagan, a Tony-winner for August, Osage County. She is credited as "Tony-Winner Deanna Dunagan."
