RUMOURS - Paramount+ w/Showtime

Synopsis: En route to the annual G7 summit, the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies get lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.

What we like:

  • Ricocheting between comedy, apocalyptic horror, and swooning soap opera, the film follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies at the annual G7 summit, where they attempt to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.

  • Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson share writing/directing duties, and the cast is impressive: Cate Blanchett, Roy Dupuis, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Charles Dance, Takehiro Hira, Denis Ménochet, Rolando Ravello, Zlatko Burić, and Alicia Vikander.

What we don’t like:

  • Bleecker Street describes the film as ‘A journey into the absurd heart of power and institutional failure in a slowly burning world.’ We all need a good laugh, but maybe this week isn’t the best time to marinate in G7 political satire. We’ll definitely check it out eventually.

Rumours
Starring Cate Blanchett, Roy Dupuis, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Charles Dance, Takehiro Hira, Denis Ménochet, Rolando Ravello, Zlatko Burić, Alicia Vikander

HEART EYES - TBD Sale / TBD Rental

Synopsis: When the "Heart Eyes Killer" strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine's Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now, they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.

What we like:

  • Josh Ruben’s romantic comedy slasher film started slow in theaters, but then became the Valentine’s Day date night movie of choice, jumping an impressive 33% over its opening night the prior week. It’s earned a respectable $27.5M at the domestic box-office.

  • Millenial icon Devon Sawa has a supporting role in the film, playing detective Zeke Hobbs. He still looks great!

What we don’t like:

  • We hear there’s a mid-credits reveal at the end of the film that’s a very important plot point, so don’t skip the credits.

REAGAN - Starz

Synopsis: Told through the voice of former KGB agent Viktor Petrovich, whose life becomes inextricably linked with Ronald Reagan's when Reagan first caught the Soviets’ attention as an actor in Hollywood, Reagan overcomes the odds to become the 40th president of the United States.

What we like:

  • We’re always happy to see Penelope Ann Miller getting work. She’s an underrated actress who never really got her due in the 80s and 90s.

  • The film was nominated for six Razzies, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Dennis Quaid), Worst Supporting Actor (Jon Voight), Worst Supporting Actress (Lesley Anne Down), Worst Screenplay, and Worst Screen Combo (Quaid and Miller). Sadly, only Voight came out a winner.

What we don’t like:

  • We didn’t really need another fawning Reagan biopic. You know what we need? A fawning Ray Gun biopic! Justice for Ray Gun!

Reagan
Starring Olek Krupa, Kevin Dillon, Dennis Quaid, Jon Voight, Penelope Ann Miller

VERMIGLIO - $19.99 Sale / TBD Rental

Synopsis: Set in the small, mountainous village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII, a series of dramatic, consequential events unfold after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier, who hides out in town after deserting the army. While there, the soldier develops a romance with a provincial family’s eldest daughter.

What we like:

  • Director Maura Delpero’s family drama has been hailed for its authentic portrayal of rural life in the Italian Alps during wartime.

  • The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, which is considered second place next to the main award, the Golden Lion, which was given to Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door.

What we don’t like:

  • The film was the Italian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.

Vermiglio
Starring Tommaso Ragno, Giuseppe de Domenico, Roberta Rovelli, Martina Scrinzi, Orietta Notari, Santiago Fondevila, Rachele Potrich, Anna Thaler, Patrick Gardner, Enrico Panizza, Luis Thaler, Simone Benedetti, Sara Serraiocco

As her sister Sonal prepares for marriage and her mother Laxmi urges her to partner up, a spiritual guru predicts Pia will meet the love of her life among her next five dates. With her family intervening, Pia embarks on a hilarious yet heartfelt quest for love.

What we like:

  • This British romcom stars Simone Ashley, best known for her roles on two Netflix hits: Bridgerton, where she plays Kathani "Kate" Bridgerton, and Sex Education, where she plays Olivia Hanan.

  • Phil Dunster, Emmy-nominated for playing Jamie Tartt on Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, has a supporting role in the film.

What we don’t like:

  • Nepo baby discourse alert! Co-lead Hero Fiennes Tiffin is the nephew of current Oscar-nominee Ralph Fiennes.

CHAOS: THE MANSON MURDERS - Netflix

Synopsis: In August 1969, Charles Manson's followers killed seven people on his orders. Why? Explore a conspiracy of mind control, CIA experiments and murder.

What we like:

  • Legendary documentary filmmaker Errol Morris, who directed landmark films like The Thin Blue Line, Gates of Heaven, and the Oscar-winning The Fog of War, focuses his camera on the Manson family murders.

  • The doc casts light on newly revealed links between the CIA, LSD, Charles Manson, and the likes of Jack Ruby and Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecutor whose 1974 bestseller Helter Skelter chronicled the Manson trial.

What we don’t like:

  • We’re huge fans of Morris and his films, but this feels like subject matter that’s been covered multiple time in the last 40 years. Still, we’re hoping the filmmaker brings something fresh to the material.

HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN - Hulu

Synopsis: Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent get stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy's past: the Crooked Man.

What we like:

  • The fourth live-action Hellboy film is the first that includes Hellboy creator Mike Mignola as a credited co-screenwriter. He did receive story credit for 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army despite not having any involvement in the actual screenplay.

  • Jack Kesy, who was great in David Fincher’s The Killer, takes over for David Harbour in the titular role.

What we don’t like:

  • After receiving a limited theatrical release in some international markets, including Belgium and the UK, distributor Ketchup Entertainment decided to take this one directly to streaming.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man
Starring Jack Kesy, Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph

HERETIC - Max

Synopsis: Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed, becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

What we like:

  • Hugh Grant in villain mode. The actor long-ago ditched his mop-headed, romantic leading man persona. And it has liberated him as an actor. From Bridget Jones’s Diary to Paddington 2, we love when Grant plays a cad.

  • Co-leads Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are both stars in the making, and while this thriller doesn’t always quite live up to their (or Grant’s) talent, they do help elevate the material.

  • Co-writer/directors Scott Beck and Bryan Wood’s script was nominated for a Film Independent Spirit Award.

What we don’t like:

  • In response to the release of the film, the LDS Church released a statement condemning its portrayal of violence against women, with the Mormon church posting an article on missionary safety to its "Newsroom" website. Here’s an idea: Don’t knock on people’s door attempting to convert them. Problem solved.

Heretic
Starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East

STARVE ACRE - Shudder, AMC+

Synopsis: When their son starts acting strangely, a couple unwittingly allow dark and sinister forces into their home, awakening a long-dormant ancient evil rooted deep in the countryside.

What we like:

  • Director Daniel Kokotajlo’s horror film is adapted from Andrew Michael Hurley's 2019 novel of the same name, and stars Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark as a couple grappling with grief.

  • The film received positive reviews when it arrived in theaters last year, with many critics hailing it as another solid addition to the recent spate of British folk horror films.

What we don’t like:

  • Animal abuse trigger warning: the film includes a scene of a young boy stabbing a pony in the eye with a stick. Yikes.

Starve Acre
Starring Matt Smith, Morfydd Clark
