Sony Pictures Classics’ KNEECAP Gets Digital Streaming Release Date
Sony Pictures Classics is set to release their Irish comedy-drama KNEECAP on VOD and digital platforms, arriving tomorrow, September 10th, 2024. The film world premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival before launching in US theaters on August 2nd, 2024.
Kneecap was written and directed by Rich Peppiatt, and depicts the rise of Belfast-based hip-hop trio, Kneecap. The film stars the band members as themselves (Naoise Ó Cairealláin, Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, JJ Ó Dochartaigh) with Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds, Adam Best, Simone Kirby, and Michael Fassbender in supporting roles.
When fate brings Belfast schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed ‘low life scum’ Naoise & Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip hop act like no other. Rapping in their native Irish language, KNEECAP fast become the unlikely figureheads of a Civil Rights movement to save their mother tongue.
But the trio must first overcome police, paramilitaries & politicians trying to silence their defiant sound - whilst their anarchic approach to life often makes them their own worst enemies. In this fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic KNEECAP play themselves, laying down a global rallying cry for the defense of native cultures.
The film was selected as the Irish entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
