Upstart distributor Willa is set to release their Independent Spirit Award nominee LA COCINA on VOD and digital platforms, arriving tomorrow, February 25th, 2025. The film world premiered at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival before launching in US theaters on October 25th, 2024.
La Cocina (Spanish for 'The Kitchen') is written and directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios, and is based on the 1957 stage play The Kitchen by Arnold Wesker. It stars Raúl Briones, Rooney Mara, Soundos Mosbah, Anna Diaz, Motell Foster, Oded Fehr, Eduardo Olmos and Spenser Granese.
It’s the lunch rush at The Grill in Manhattan, and money has gone missing from the till. All the undocumented cooks are being investigated, and Pedro (Raúl Briones) is the prime suspect. He’s a dreamer and a troublemaker, and in love with Julia (Rooney Mara), an American waitress who cannot commit to a relationship. Rashid, The Grill's owner, has promised to help Pedro with his papers so he can “become legal”. But a shocking revelation about Julia compels Pedro to spiral into an act that will stop the production line of one of the city’s busiest kitchens once and for all.
La Cocina was nominated for two Film Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Director for Alonso Ruizpalacios, and Best Cinematography for Juan Pablo Ramírez.
We’ve added the release date to our streaming calendar. Check out the film’s official US trailer below.
