When To Stream’s Weekly Tracking Report
Welcome to When To Stream’s Weekly Tracking Report. Every Friday, we’ll break down the film titles whose first window streaming premieres are still not confirmed. This column will not examine second window SVOD premieres, though we’ll obviously still be tracking and reporting those.
One note: There are hundreds of new films every year, and we’re not able to track or highlight every single one. For now, we concentrate on major studio and indie distributor releases. If there are titles you’d like us to track, let us know in the comments. We’ll do our best to follow up, but might not have the bandwidth to spotlight fully.
Here are the film titles (in order of theatrical release) we are currently tracking:
Theatrical Release Date: July 28, 2023
Tracking: Reports indicate a Blu-ray release date in Japan is set for 2/28/24, so there’s hope a US release date is concurrent. We’re sticking with our estimate for now.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: February/March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: September 22, 2023
Tracking: This week, A24 announced they will release a Stop Making Sense: Deluxe Collector’s Edition on 4K Blu-ray, which will cost a whopping $53. No street date announced, but it is expected to ship in May. We imagine the restored film will become available digitally at the same time. We’re pushing back our estimate again.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD/SVOD Estimate: May 2024
Theatrical Release Date: October 4, 2023
Tracking: Still no announcement from Sony Pictures Classics, and no pre-order available. The film did not get a nomination in the Best Live Action Short category when Oscar nominations, so it won’t be a part of the Oscar Shorts theatrical release. We anticipate a streaming plan will be announced soon.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: February 2024
ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY
Theatrical Release Date: November 10, 2023
Tracking: Janus keeps their films exclusively in theaters between 3 and 4 months. Criterion Channel released their programming highlights for February, and Orlando was not included. That’s not unusual, as they often hold their premiere announcements until closer to launch date. Holding on our estimate for now.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD/SVOD Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024 (Criterion Channel)
Theatrical Release Date: November 10, 2023
Tracking: A Still Small Voice is being distributed by Abramorama Films, whose digital releases are all over the map. Though short listed, the film did not receive a nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category when Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. We imagine a streaming announcement will come soon.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Mid February 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023
Tracking: With the film’s theatrical run coming to an end, we hope this means a streaming release date announcement is imminent. Still, Toho has a reputation for holding back their releases for a long time. The film was such a monster hit, it would be unusual not to try to maximize revenue while it’s still top of mind. The film did receive an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024
RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCE
Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023
Tracking: Still no word on streaming plans for this concert film. We’re hoping some kind of announcement is imminent, even if it’s a direct-to-SVOD deal. The lack of pre-order doesn’t give us much confidence we’ll see this soon. We’re adjusting our estimate accordingly.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: LateFebruary/Early March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023
Tracking: Angel Studios has made The Shift available on their streaming platform, but only for their ‘Angel Investors.’ With After Death now on PVOD, we expect The Shift’s date to be a bit later this month.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Late February 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023
Tracking: Wim Wenders’ first of two film this winter (PERFECT DAYS arrives this week) is best experienced in 3D. Janus Films will likely keep this in theaters as long as they can, as they should. We don’t expect any sort of streaming release until Spring 2024.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD/SVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024 (Criterion Channel)
Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023
Tracking: Although it’s was screening in limited release for a few weeks, we’re treating 12/8 as its proper release date. As with most GKIDS releases, it’s likely to have a long theatrical-exclusive window. The film did become available for pre-order on iTunes, so there’s hope an earlier launch is planned. We’ve adjusted our estimate a bit to reflect.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($19.99)
PVOD Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023
Tracking: With its theatrical run starting to wind down, we’re thinking Searchlight Pictures will want to get this out on digital before the Oscars. Their All of Us Strangers just announced a joint Hulu/digital release, but we think Poor Things is likely to launch digital-only. Sticking with our early March estimate for now, but wouldn’t be surprised if it came late February.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Early March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 15, 2023
Tracking: The film was made available for pre-order this week, which means A24 is prepping to launch the film digitally. It’s priced for a sale-only launch, so no PVOD options. A24 rarely announces their premiere dates in advance, so we’re basing our estimate on some shaky sources.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($19.99)
VOD Estimate: February 20, 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023
Tracking: A VOD/digital and Hulu launch date of 2/22 was announced.
Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023
Tracking: Sony releases their ‘Valentine Encore’ edition of the film in theaters this weekend, with bonus scenes included. We imagine we’ll get a digital launch date the week after.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Late February
Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023
Tracking: The film continues to lose screens, and the box-office is pretty mediocre. We still don’t think SPC will fast track it to PVOD, so we’re sticking to our estimate for now.
Pre-Order Availability: No
VOD Estimate: Late March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023
Tracking: Another A24 title that became available for pre-order this week. We think a digital release is imminent, though no confirmation yet. Our specific estimate is based on sources that are reliable, but not rock solid.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($19.99)
VOD Estimate: February 13, 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 22, 2023
Tracking: A digital release date of 2/20 has been announced.
Theatrical Release Date: December 25, 2023
Tracking: The third A24 film to be offered for pre-order this week, Steve McQueen’s 4-hour documentary is poised to make its way to digital by the end of the month. We’re revising our estimate accordingly.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($19.99)
VOD Estimate: Late February 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 25, 2023
Tracking: Sony Pictures Classics got the Oscar nomination it was looking for, as The Teacher’s Lounge was nominated for Best International Feature. Look for an aggressive theatrical roll out in the coming weeks. We’re holding on our estimate.
Pre-Order Availability: No
VOD Estimate: Late March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: January 12, 2024
Tracking: The film launched on PVOD on 2/6.
Theatrical Release Date: January 12, 2024
Tracking: Paramount’s musical comedy is a big hit in theaters and continues to perform well. It looks like Paramount will be holding back the digital release a week, though we still think a Paramount+ premiere is likely in February.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($24.99)
PVOD Estimate: February 20, 2024
Theatrical Release Date: January 12, 2024
Tracking: Chile’s entry for the Best International Feature Oscar was not short listed, but we’re still anticipating MUBI will give the film a proper two month theatrical window. Look for it to hit SVOD in mid-March.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($14.99)
SVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024 (MUBI US)
Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024
Tracking: Distributor Dark Sky Films is handling this one, and their films usually have a quick pivot to VOD/EST. Still no announcement or pre-order, we’re pushing back our estimate a bit.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Late February 2024
Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024
Tracking: The film launched on PVOD on 2/6
INSIDE THE YELLOW COCOON SHELL
Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024
Tracking: This Kino Lorber release will roll out slowly in arthouse theaters, and then likely hit VOD/EST in late winter.
Pre-Order Availability: No
VOD/EST Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 2024
Tracking: No Oscar nominations for Ava DuVernay’s drama, so unless it catching on quickly with audiences in theaters, we’re expecting a digital release in a few weeks. Holding on our estimate for now.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($14.99)
VOD/EST Estimate: Late February 2024
Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024
Tracking: No nominations for Best International Feature or Animated Feature for this Sony Pictures Classics release. Still, the distributor has held firm on its 90-day theatrical window. Our estimate reflects The Peasants will follow suit.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Late April 2024
Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024
Tracking: A VOD/Digital date of 3/12 is expected.
Theatrical Release Date: January 26, 2024
Tracking: This Mexican import was Spirit Award nominated, so hopes were high it would get a Best International Feature nomination (it did not). Distributor Sideshow will likely follow their usual playbook: slow, steady roll out with at least a 90-day window to PVOD/SVOD.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD/SVOD Estimate: Late April 2024 (Criterion Channel)
Theatrical Release Date: February 2, 2024
Tracking: Both Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon enjoyed 45-day theatrical exclusive windows, and we’re estimating Argylle will have the same.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 2, 2024
Tracking: Indie distributor Big World Pictures is handling this Franz Rogowski drama, and we don’t have much tracking info on their releases. For now, we’re estimating a 45-day window.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 2, 2024
Tracking: A MUBI release, so it’ll likely follow the playbook of their other releases: a 60-day theatrical exclusive window. Fallen Leaves debuted on the MUBI subscription platform before its digital release, we’re forecasting the same for this title.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($14.99)
SVOD Estimate: Early April 2024 (MUBI)
Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024
Tracking: Roadside Attractions is handling distribution, and their releases usually pivot to PVOD after three weeks. That’s our forecast for this title as well.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Early/Mid March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 2, 2024
Tracking: When Magnolia Pictures doesn’t release a title day-and-date, they usually keep theatrical exclusivity for about 21 days. That’s our forecast for the Mads Mikkelsen historical drama.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: February 23, 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 2, 2024
Tracking: Roadside Attractions is going pretty wide with this one this weekend, which indicates they may want to fast-track it to PVOD. We’re estimating a short window for this comedy.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Mid/Late February 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 7, 2024
Tracking: NEON has put this one up for pre-order already, though not at a PVOD price point. We’re estimating it’ll hit digital in about a month.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($14.99)
VOD Estimate: Early March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024
Tracking: Utopia is handling distribution on this Cynthia Erivo-starring indie. Their films usually take at least 45-days to reach digital. We think this one should follow suit.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Late March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024
Tracking: Focus Features is taking this horror comedy ultra-wide, which means it’ll likely adhere to Universal/Focus’s 18-day theatrical window. No reason to believe they’ll change course.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($29.99)
PVOD Estimate: February 27, 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024
Tracking: Bleecker Street opens this horror thriller semi-wide today (~900 screens), so look for a quick pivot to digital. We’re estimating a window similar to their just-released I.S.S.
Pre-Order Availability: Yes ($14.99)
PVOD Estimate: Late February 2024
Theatrical Release Date: February 9, 2024
Tracking: IFC Films opens this acclaimed drama is limited release today, then goes semi-wide on Valentine’s Day. It’s a crowd-pleaser, but we’re worried the older arthouse crowd still isn’t back in the theatergoing habit. If it struggles to break out, look for a digital release next month.
Pre-Order Availability: No
PVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024
