After releasing it as a three-part mini-series on their linear network and streaming service, AMC has quietly added the theatrical cut of BLACKBERRY to AMC+ today, November 17th, 2023. The film launched in US theaters on May 12th, 2023 before hitting PVOD on June 2nd.

BlackBerry was directed by Matt Johnson from a script by Johnson and producer Matthew Miller. It was adapted from Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff's book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry. It chronicles the creation of the BlackBerry line of mobile phones by co-founders Douglas Fregin and Mike Lazaridis, and investor Jim Balsillie. Lazaridis is portrayed by Jay Baruchel, Balsillie is portrayed by Glenn Howerton, and Fregin is portrayed by Johnson. It also stars Rich Sommer, Michael Ironside, Martin Donovan, Michelle Giroux, SungWon Cho, Saul Rubinek, and Cary Elwes in supporting roles.

Howerton is receiving Oscar buzz for his performance, and the decision to elevate the film by releasing it as a mini-series has been questioned by some. Ben Travers from Indiewire nicely breaks down why it might be problematic. AMC+ is not highlighting the release of the film on its service yet, preferring to spotlight the episodic version. In fact, the only way to get to BlackBerry (the movie) is by searching for it. But it’s there (see screenshot below).
