Welcome to When To Stream’s super-sized monthly preview! We’re here to give you an overview of the top streaming titles (including PVOD, Digital, and SVOD) expected in August 2024, and also give a glimpse at the films we expect to launch this month, but have not yet been announced.

THE BEAST (The Criterion Channel)

  • Synopsis: In the near future where emotions have become a threat, Gabrielle finally decides to purify her DNA in a machine that will immerse her in her past lives and rid her of any strong feelings. She then meets Louis and feels a powerful connection, as if she had known him forever.

  • Fun Fact: The film ends with a QR code that encodes the URL of a video of the film's credits roll, in lieu of having closing credits itself. DIrector Bertrand Bonello made this decision during the editing. He said it was because he wanted to evoke the "brutality" of old films that did not have end credits, and because it "fit well with the dehumanization of the film at that moment in 2044."

GODZILLA MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR (Netflix)

  • Synopsis: In postwar Japan, Godzilla brings new devastation to an already scorched landscape. With no military intervention or government help in sight, the survivors must join together in the face of despair and fight back against an unrelenting horror.

  • Fun Fact: This is the first Godzilla movie to be a period piece, set during the American submission of Japan and almost a decade before the original Godzilla (1954)

  • Fun Fact: Mia Goth is the granddaughter of Brazilian actress Maria Gladys. As Goth became more popular in Brazil, marketing for Maxxxine in Brazil exploited the connection and "The granddaughter of Brazilian actress Maria Gladys" succeeded Goth's name whenever it was mentioned while promoting the movie.

REBEL MOON - THE DIRECTOR’S CUT (Netflix)

  • Synopsis: In Snyder’s director’s cut, a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, and Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.
