Welcome to When To Stream’s first super-sized monthly preview! We’re here to give you an overview of the top streaming titles (including PVOD, Digital, and SVOD) expected in July 2024, and also give a glimpse at the films we expect to launch this month, but have not yet been announced.

  • Synopsis: Sylvia is a social worker who leads a simple and structured life: her daughter, her job, her AA meetings. This is blown open when Saul follows her home from their high school reunion. Their surprise encounter will profoundly impact both of them as they open the door to the past.

  • Fun Fact: This comes from Ketchup Entertainment, which never fails to make us chuckle.

  • Synopsis: Inseparable best friends AJ & Moose decide to run the local pool's snack shack after their plan to sell home-brewed beer goes down the drain. Things take a turn when they meet Brooke, an effortlessly cool lifeguard who puts their big plans, and friendship, at risk.

  • Fun Fact: Co-star Gabriel LaBelle, who played Steven Spielberg stand-in Sammy Fabelman in The Fabelmans, will next play another mogul: Lorne Michaels in SNL 1975.

FIREBRAND (VOD/Digital)

  • Synopsis: Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry VIII, is named regent while the tyrant battles abroad. When the king returns, increasingly ill and paranoid, Katherine finds herself fighting for her own survival.

  • Fun Fact: Jude Law wore a scent that smelled like "blood, fecal matter, and sweat" while performing his role of Henry VIII. "I thought it would have a great impact if I smelt awful", he said at a Cannes Film Festival press conference.

KIDNAPPED: THE ABDUCTION OF EDGARDO MORTARA (VOD/Digital)

  • Synopsis: The story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy living in Bologna, Italy, who in 1858, after being secretly baptized, was forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. His parents’ struggle to free their son became part of a larger political battle that pitted the papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification.

  • Fun Fact: Steven Spielberg was intending to direct a version of this story around 2016.

  • Synopsis: Forty years after his unforgettable first case in Beverly Hills, Detroit cop Axel Foley returns to do what he does best: solve crimes and cause chaos.

  • Fun Fact: Will be released 30 years after Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) and 40 years after the first Beverly Hills Cop (1984).

  • Synopsis: Tiffany "Rex" Simpson has always dreamed of going to space, and her "doctored" application lands her in NASA's ultra-competitive astronaut training program.   • Fun Fact: Emma Roberts’ arm is being pulled out of its socket in the poster. She’s actually in a tremendous amount of pain.

  • Synopsis: The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame. Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.

  • Fun Fact: Marisa Abela does her own singing in the film and trained extensively to mimic Amy Winehouse’s vocals.

THE IMAGINARY (Netflix)

  • Synopsis: Rudger, a made-up friend, gets separated from his best friend Amanda and must team up with lost Imaginaries to get back to her before he fades away.

  • Fun Fact: This film is not the Imaginary with the deadly teddy bear (is the bear deadly? We haven’t seen it yet).

THE MONK AND THE GUN (Hulu)

  • Synopsis: In 2006, as Bhutan prepares to hold its democratic election, Bhutanese government stages a mock election as a training exercise. In the town of Ura, an old lama instructs young monk Tashi to procure some firearms by way of preparation for the impending upheaval. Meanwhile, American visitor Ron Coleman arrives in the country to acquire for a weapons collector an antique rifle - which by chance falls into the monk's hands.

  • Fun Fact: From the director of the Oscar-nominated Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom.

KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (VOD/Digital)

  • Synopsis: Several generations in the future following Caesar's reign, apes are now the dominant species and live harmoniously while humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

  • Synopsis: In a segregated Texas, five Mexican-American teenage caddies were prohibited from playing at the country club where they worked. Against all odds, they formed their own team, built a one-hole course in the fields, and won the 1957 Texas State championship. Based on a true story.

  • Fun Fact: Co-lead Jay Hernandez played Thomas Magnum in the CBS Magnum P.I. reboot.

  • Synopsis: In the 1860s, fiercely independent French-Canadian Vivienne Le Coudy embarks on a journey with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen, attempting to forge a life together in the dusty town of Elk Flats, Nevada. When Holger decides to go fight for the Union in the burgeoning Civil War, Vivienne must fend for herself, which isn't easy in a town controlled by a corrupt mayor.

  • Synopsis: Reclusive gym manager Lou falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Las Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.

  • Synopsis: When 93-year-old Thelma Post gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she sets out on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her.

  • Fun Fact: This is Richard Roundtree's final film role before his passing in October 2023, 3 months before the film's world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (again, not ‘fun’, but notable).

KNOX GOES AWAY (Max)

  • Synopsis: A contract killer, after being diagnosed with a fast-moving form of dementia, is presented with the opportunity to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged adult son. But to do so, he must race against the police closing in on him as well as the ticking clock of his own rapidly deteriorating mind.

  • Fun Fact: This is the fourth film where Al Pacino appeared with an actor who has played Batman. Michael Keaton here, Val Kilmer in Heat (1995), Ben Affleck in Gigli (2003) and George Clooney in Ocean's Thirteen (2007). That is more of a ‘dumb’ fact than ‘fun’ fact.

  • Synopsis: Tennis player turned coach Tashi has taken her husband, Art, and transformed him into a world-famous Grand Slam champion.
